Hi everyone, I have been on antiobiotics for several years, namely doxycycline, to minocycline and now back to doxycycline.

I have actually IBS, which is due to severe heartburn flaring up due to doxycycline,(thats why i was adjusted to mino).

My IBS has been getting worse, but I really don't want to stop my acne medicines due to previous appalling experiences of halting my consumption of these pills. However, Im still at a loss.

Currently Im eating 50mg doxycycline every 2 days, what should I do?

Does eating probiotics help or shld i just stop the antibiotics? Thanks.

i have been on antibiotics(doxycyline) for almost 30 years. i use it to control adult acne and chronic bladder infections. make sure you eat something non-dairy before you take your doxycyline and you can try otc prilosec or pepcid. they can be taken with doxy. not maalox or tums but the prilosec. take it 1/2 hour before you eat anything. it works better if you can take it before breakfast. i have ibs too but mine is from stress.or so they say. good luck. i am on dicyclomine and clindinium/chlordiazepozide. the latter did so good for me. i feel your pain. blessings.

wannabepoet, thanks for replying!

U have taken doxycycline for so long but this has no adverse effect on your digestive systems?

iv been on minocycline and doxycycline during the past 2 years and iv had no problems. or at least im not aware of any. my mom is a nutritionist and gives me vitamins for what antibiotics deplete you of and such. it is suggested you take vitamins 2 hours after the antibiotic so that they still work fully. so id suggest you go to a nutritionist to give you the vitamins your body neeRAB and if that still doesnt help, then i would try looking for antibiotic alternatives.

also, wannabepoet, you mentioned youve been on doxy for 30 years for acne. i thought you eventually become immune to antibiotics, like after a year or so?

i think antibiotics pretty much clear both the bad and the good bacterias that reside in our digestive channels of our bodies. Didn't know much about the deprivation of vitamins which may result.

I have eaten for about 3+ years now, and i eat it every 2 days, plus application of tretinoin cream. Still pretty much manageable if you eat those medicines regularly.

Antibiotics do cause digestive upset, as well as some other problems. It's best not to take them for acne unless the acne is very severe and you've had no luck with cleansers and topical treatments.

Inchvbeam, it might be worth talking to your doctor about other options.
