Antichrist

I saw the film last night too.

Wasn't particularly shocked by it, I don't see why people have to be so prudish.

Can I ask, did you find it misogynistic? (oh and are you a man or a woman?)

I'm a woman and my first reaction to the film was that it is definitely not painting a nice picture of women and female sexuality. I was actually quite angry. I really like Lars von Trier, but I think he was a warped view of sex and women.

What did you think?

Thanks for that review!

I am still confused at to whether I enjoyed the film or not. I have battled severe anxiety and depression and within the first 30 minutes it really hit home. After that I think I became very confused as to whether this film was trying to be too clever. I think it ultimately failed, but I read feedback from other people - some say it's great, some say it's crap. I've still to make up my mind.

the 3 films of his i have seen all revolve around women being abused - dancer in the dark, dogville, breaking the waves

makes me laugh when he goes on about how hateful america is...his misogyny is far worse

I saw this yesterday and i liked it. The graphic penetration shot at the start really wasn't necessary and just seemed to be there for controversies sake. However, the whole film was beautifully filmed and the two leaRAB acted brilliantly, a scene of Willem Dafoe walking behind a coffin near the start was particularly empathetic. The story was also very clever and definitely not for people who have short attention spans. At my screening there were quite a few walk outs, and the general reaction from the audience at the end seemed to be negative, but if you go in expecting a tightly wound psychological thriller that treats the viewer as an adult then you should walk away satisfied.

I'm not too sure that the talking fox was such a good idea though, pretty much everyone thought that was hilarious.

Awful film. Porn-horror masquerading as art. It tries desperately to shock and confuse the viewer but ultimately it's just a dreary, boring story about a disturbed woman who has a deep psychological fear of being abandoned, even to the point where she "hobbles" her own child to make him more dependant on her. When her point of focus shifts from the child to her husband she does nothing to prevent her child's accidental death so that her husband will shower attention onto her. It's a simple as that. The Director seems to have thrown in genital mutilation and graphic sex scenes to disguise this complete borefest as "art". Cobblers.

"Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain't heard nothin' yet!" as Al Jolson once said.

I wasn't shocked as such angel1ka. It's certainly nasty and challenging.

I'm a man, and I don't think LvT intended to make a misogynistic film, I think he was mentally ill at the time and his depression manifested itself as this film. But I can understand why you felt that way, and that's why I cannot see it going into many cinemas

well, as I said before I wasn't shocked, just a bit frustrated, maybe even angry, but I would like to see it going into cinemas, wouldn't want it to be censored or anything.

I mean, I am not even sure if was indeed a misogynistic film (regardless of von Trier's intentions), but I suspect it was a bit (or at least sexist) and would like to see if other people felt that way too.

I don't think his other films are misogynistic by the way (though he does seem to have very set views on what the female role is, so in that sense he is a bit of a sexist but so are most people anyway).

^^ agree with the randomness of the graphic penetration at the start, I think the scene would have been just as, if not more powerful without it.

The talking fox was just... I couldn't help but laught at that point.

Von Trier assumed it wouldn't get past the BBFC, as pornographic scenes including erection, ejaculation etc seldom do.

That Antichrist was released fully uncut is a milestone in the BBFC's history.

I don't think he is a misogynist - maybe a sexist, but not a misogynist. But most people are sexist (men and women), so I don't think he can be blamed for that. Sexism does not entail hatred by the way.

Well he's right about it being memorable. It's definitely art though. Quite impressive art as well. Can't wait for the actual Mail review, although they may have painted themselves into a corner by giving Donkey Punch such a bad review it becomes impossible to give a more negative one.
