Antichrist

You need a fairly strong stomach to watch Salo. It really takes cinema viewing to the limit. Am I right in thinking that the movie begins with horses shagging? That's pretty graphic (as far as horse porn goes :-)

I stopped the video at the circle of shit point, ejected it and gingerly removed it from the player as if it was a turd and flung it. bit of a wimp when it comes to coprophagia.

True! :D

I think I'll finish by saying that BBFC's rating is a bit odd. For example, an 18 can contain tame things because of just one small thing making it an 18 rather than a 15, or it can be extreme and use up everything that is allowed at an 18 before either being an R18 or just being rejected.

Now, maybe we should try and talk about the movie a bit? ;)

...If you want to of course!

I got it from LoveFilm but I may have to get the dvd just to have a look at the booklet and the special features, can't say i'd watch the film all that often but would be good to add to the collection.

Steer clear of Salo. It's quite the pile of poop, no pun intended! I actually found the 'circle of blood' chapter far more disturbing than the (admittedly horrible) crap chomping.

I saw Antichrist at the cinema and wrote my mumbled, jumbled thoughts on another film website. I'm female and I loved it. I'll copy/paste some of what I wrote here...

***spoilers within***

My thoughts on this film are a little confused right now. That

Saw this at the weekend. It is harrowing stuff.

As usual with LvT, the emphasis is on theme and acting, though this is set in "the real world" rather than in the stage sets of Dogville and Manderlay. I saw it at Cineworld Haymarket, and the digital projection was excellent. The very cinematic scenes at the start of the film were absolutely stunning.

I'm not whether LvT is sexist in his films, or whether he simply has a poor view of both men and women. In a sense...

WdF's character brought the violence upon himself by suggesting that the child being made to wear shoes on the wrong feet may have been an element in his death.

It's very real sex. In black and white, with the Rinaldo: Lascia ch'io pianga aria by Handel playing. Highly artistic ****ing in close up. Bravo, 10/10. ;)

The BBFC have passed a number of films over the past few years at 18 that contain unsimulated sex so your "roll eyes" makes you look a bit of an idiot

The BBFC passed the X-rated version of Caligula last year which is basically an R18 movie but with an 18 certificate. You can get it at Blockbuster. And yes you see everything.

Passed 18 today by the bbfc uncut with the following advice:

"ANTICHRIST is an English language drama from director Lars von Trier. It tells the story of a couple trying to come to terms with the death of their young son. After the mother experiences a mental breakdown, they retreat to an isolated cabin in the wooRAB where the child's father, a therapist, hopes to help the mother to confront her fears. The film was classified '18' for strong real sex, bloody violence and self-mutilation.

The brief images of explicit real sex (sight of a penis penetrating a vagina during a consensual sex scene and sight of the man's penis being masturbated to climax) language."

QUOTE]

I wonder if the penis belongs to Willem Defoe and the vagina to Charlotte Gainsbourg, or do we assume it's a stunt-c*ck?

Ooooooooo very nice review Badcoverversion! I didn't love it as much as you did but I'm female and thought it was rather good too. As usual the media hype what appears in the film up a millions times than it actually is...

Antichrist

"The most challenging film ever at the Cannes film festival" screams the UK poster. For once it may not be hyperbole.

It becomes a horror film in the end, which is disappointing as I thought it may go elsewhere, although as it's probably the most nasty horror I've ever seen- worse than Salo 120 days of Sodom- I guess I can't complain.

Seriously, God only knows where this will find an audience. I'd imagine the most liberal of liberal arthouse cinemas will have issues with it.

It is very well acted, shot and directed- it's the best film since Let the Right One In in my humble opinion (and the talking fox kicks arse!)- but much like I felt about Requiem for a Dream, I'm not sure I'd watch it again.
