Reading through some of the threaRAB I see that two opinions are suggested prior to surgery : a fellowship trained orthropedic spine specialist and a neurosurgeon. What is the difference between an orthropedic surgeon and a fellowship trained one?

Hi, what you want to look for is an orthopedic spine specialist OR a neurologist that specializes in spine surgery AND have a spine fellowship (spine fellowship is where the specialist gets more specialized & focused training in that particular area, such as the spine and in surgery of that area). The more knowledge and experience one has in what you need, the better. I personally chose a surgeon who is an Orthopedic Spine Specialist (and does have spine fellowship). But some people, prefer a Neurological Surgeon with spine fellowship. And make sure either one is a specialist (like a spine specialist), not a general neurologist or orthopedist.

Hi, I'm sorry I can't provide any info regarding any websites or links, as that is not permitted on here. But it probably has somethign to do with it, though usually when you look up a doctor, it should say somewhere that they are fellowship trained. I'm sorry that I can't tell you where to look, though. You can probably call a hospital or if you have a physical therapist, they might be able to recommend someone. Also, you can ask whatever doctor you are seeing now to guide you in that. OK, i just read that board certified would be the first thing to look for , then find out if they also have a fellowship as they are 2 seperate things. The fellowship provides even more extensive training (including surgical training).
