Another leak on FUNimation's server: Phantom Ep.10 Leaked a day before Japan's debut

Also if it was private, if people have the iPhone, they could get it as well. Since that is how they were able to leak the "Meet the Spy" video in such a clever manner.

Seriously?

Funimation neeRAB to hire some competent guys to actually secure their servers. That, or not leave the episodes in incredbily obvious places.

I'd be raging hard at fansubbers if Funimation actually took some safety precautions. As it is, it's like watching a child bring a shiny new toy to school and leaving it in his desk while he goes to lunch.

Here's the excuse I need to start buying One Piece again ...not like I've watch it since it left Toonami..
I think these are the same guys stealing these it for early episodes..there just doing giggles now.

Just because it's easy to steal from a baby doesn't make it right. Work that to this argument as you will.

However, this is D-grade security. If they aren't actively looking for new IT people, they should be.

That is indeed suspicious. I hope it isn't the case that a big name site like ANN is just going through the motions in covering this but actually shielding the guilty party.

If fansubs want a war, it's childish. They do not own these shows. Many of them put the work in and let people see these when they otherwise wouldn't, fine. But there is no sense of ownership there. Fansubs (key word being Fan) are supposed to be an unofficial translation to tide folks over until an official one exists. They are NOT supposed to play the childish game of "Well, I was here first" and especially not to a violent degree such as this. If you have the time and talent to code and translate stuff, go and use that talent to find employment. Don't screw over everybody else purely to satisfy your ego.

They're not shielding the guilty party, they are trying not to publicize them on purpose because in this case that's what they are after, attention.

This leak was caused by the same people who popularized the one piece leak, i.e. not the original torrent but the people who made a copy torrent later on.... they've been ripping streams from CR for a while..
Note, they aren't a fansubbing group, they've never subbed a thing in their life. They just rip streaming videos, basically.

ANN was not publicizing their names to hide their identities but to try and not play into their hanRAB, I think.

Well, considering the editorial writing of the staff in recent years (and certain forum posts), I want to think that they have their heaRAB on straight. Justin Sevakis, after all, was an early advocate of online anime at a time when nobody was doing it and it was just a nice idea.

There are a few possibilities. One is that they know and are not reporting it because they want to focus to be on the fact that Funi's security is really wanting, or they don't want to give a certain group the attention that they are craving. Another is that they think they know but the evidence is tenuous enough that they don't think it's good enough to print. Yet another is that they don't know and the wording difference is just a coincidence, which seems a bit unlikely to me but by no means impossible.

The thing is there's lots of internet speculation out there about this, so maybe focusing ire in the correct place would be a net good. But at a minimum, if either of the first two conditions are the case, then as I said they should at least pass that on to FUNimation even if they aren't completely sure. What's not good enough to report as a reporter would still be valid to pass on as a fan in this situation.

Edit: Good points made in this forum post by ANN's editor in chief (tempest), which I'll quote below without comment since I can't direct link to posts over there like I can here:

FUNi neeRAB to not put the episode up until the day its scheduled to air. Even if they are working on it beforehand, don't put it on the server in any shape, form, or fashion until the day it premieres.

FUNi did actually increase their security measures, but when you have groups that know how to rip webisodes from secure servers, their is only so much a company can do. I don't blame FUNi for this, because their securoty has been improving. Whichever site is ripping them neeRAB to be taken down, period.

FUNimation seriously neeRAB to get some better security. I mean come, Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Sure the people who are doing this will still try most likely but at least make it super difficult for them.

I concur, Its a good thing i was planning on buyin some funi products this month! I really wish these fan subbers would grow up! quite messing with funimation ya looneys!, cause if they go under, my dream of seeing more case closed episodes & movies dubbed in english will be dead!

That's what's so scary about this. Legal distribution being attacked by illegal distributors. It's like a Wal-Mart being destroyed by DVD bootleggers.

I want my legal subs.
