another fish myth to pls clear up ?

i read on a fish site that rummy nosed tetras are good to have in your tank as they are sensitive to water condition's and you can judge if there is something wrong if they lose the colour from their noses therefore they are a good indicator when your water is not tip top. and they regain their colour when things are ok
is this true or a load of baloney i have 4 rummy nosed and the only time the colour faded in their noses was when i added then to my tank after a couple of hours they reddened up again

Its true of all fish, if the Ammonia,Nitrites or Nitrates are high they will not show good color. When they are getting a proper diet and they are kept in clean water then they show brighter colors. I have also heard this about rummy noise tetras and being we already know this is a typical fish behavior I will say YES. Its true. Just keep up with your water changes and don't over feed and you will have no worries. Good Luck
 
It's a bit like people and saying you look off colour. Stressing any fish will make its colours fade so technically that could be a true statement, but likewise if there is an aggressive fish in the tank the same colour loss will occur. Tiger Barbs will loss their red nose and stripes if you stress them and that happens every time you net them, so I wouldn't put too much faith in that urban myth. Unhappy fish loss colour - any fish.

If you want an organic indicator of water quality there is nothing better than those horrible snails that come in with live plants :o) Before the fish are effected the snails will start to climb the glass in numbers you didn't think you had. Extremely accurate visual aid.
