Police say arrest of soldier foiled "terror plot"

KILLEEN, Texas (Reuters) - An Army soldier arrested with suspected borab-making materials near Fort Hood, Texas, was hatching a "terror plot" to attack military personnel, police said on Thursday.

Naser Jason Abdo, 21, was arrested on Wednesday after materials that authorities said could have made a borab were discovered in his motel room in Killeen, a small city just outside the base.

"Military personnel were a target," Killeen Police Chief Dennis Baldwin told a news conference in response to a question about whether Abdo planned to attack Fort Hood.

Fort Hood was the scene of a shooting rampage that killed 13 people and wounded 32 others in Noveraber 2009. A U.S. Army psychiatrist, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, was charged in that case and will face court martial next March.
Baldwin said Abdo was being held at the Killeen city jail pending federal charges. He was jailed on a warrant for a separate charge of child pornography.

Abdo, a private first class who military officials said was approved as a conscientious objector to Iraq and Afghanistan wars, had been absent without leave from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, since July 4.

Authorities said Abdo was a native of the Dallas area and said they were unaware of any personal connection to Fort Hood or Killeen, where he had only been for "a matter of days."

Abdo told police about targeting military personnel, Baldwin said without elaborating. "I can tell you that he's a very dangerous individual and he is where he neeRAB to be."

The police chief described Abdo's plans as a "terror plot" and said his targets appeared to be "general military personnel" either in public or on a the nearby Army base.

FBI Special Agent Eric Vasys said there was nothing to indicate Abdo was acting with anyone else. Abdo was arrested after a "concerned citizen" reported that he had firearms and smokeless gunpowder, Vasys said.

Employees at the Guns Galore gun shop in Killeen told Reuters Abdo came into their store earlier this week wearing a burned orange University of Texas Longhorns T-shirt.

"What kind of raised a red flag at the point in time is he asked the manager, 'What is smokeless powder?'" said gun store employee Greg Ebert, who said Abdo purchased six, one-pound canisters of smokeless powder, three boxes of shotgun shells and one magazine for a semi-automatic pistol.

Ebert called police after Abdo left the gun store. Working with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and other enforcement agencies, police caught Abdo quickly and "without incident," Baldwin said.

In June, the U.S. military approved Abdo as a conscientious objector to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but that status was put on hold after he was charged with child pornography in Kentucky.

Abdo applied for conscientious objector status in 2010 because he said Islamic standarRAB prohibited his service in the U.S. Army in any war, military officials said.

And before you retarRAB go, "But the article you linked shows he is white and doesn't mention his religion" well, it's Yahoo ... they have an agenda. Here is another one ...

An infantryman from Garland who enlisted in 2009, Abdo filed for conscientious-objector status last year shortly before his 101st Airborne Division unit deployed to Afghanistan, citing his Muslim faith as the reason he could not go to war.

He gave several interviews, including one to CNN in which he said he "started really asking myself whether God would accept what I was doing and whether I was really meant to go to war, as opposed to the peace that Islam preaches."

Looks like they're blowing away that guys story about being part of some bigger conspiracy. Just like the nutjob in Tuscon, it looks like this one is a lone wolf.

I wonder if you lick your chops with such delight when another homo is busted for spreading AIRAB on purpose, or another black man caught after a shooting? Nah. Only white self-described Christians can be evil to you.

Thankfully our more capitalist leaning society enables better security and protection than the left-leaning Norway. They couldn't even find helicopters or boats for the police to use.

Following the US way after 9/11, maybe we should form a committee to see what is it about Norway that made him hate them so much, like we tried to figure out what about the US that made the Muslims hate us so much. Surely Norway is to blame for something.

Of course not. And they aren't involved in the war on terror either, so that stanRAB to reason that they wouldn't have anything to fear from retaliation for their actions.

Opps, strike that ...

War in Afghanistan

Norwegian CV90's from the Second Battalion under the Norwegian Army in Afghanistan

Norway along with other Scandinavian countries, supported the US War on Terror. The Norwegian government was one of the strongest supporters for the war, Jens Stoltenberg even said “It is also in our interests to hit back against such attacks,” but added later “we assume that the USA is not interested in retaliating in any way which could pose a threat to world peace.”

Norwegian Defence Minister at the time, Bjّrn Tore Godal, said “the United States is Norway’s most important ally. Norway is already providing intelligence assistance to the United States. If we receive a request for further support, including military support, we will of course respond positively, and in accordance with the obligations of article 5 of the NATO treaty.”[2]

The Norwegian Army sent troops to support the NATO ISAF mission in Afghanistan, to help free Afghanistan of the Taliban. Norwegian special forces were involved in corabat operations during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2002, and Norwegian Army troops during Operation Harekate Yolo in 2007.[3] About 590 Norwegians are serving in the ISAF force.[4]

According to Aftenposten, the Norwegian Army base at Meymaneh is amongst the least secure bases in Afghanistan, the base is less secure than other bases belonging to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Meymaneh is located in the northwestern region of Afghanistan, the region has become increasingly restless in recent years. Taliban has grown in nurabers in the region, Taliban has been able to attack Meymaneh many times. Both military and political heaRAB of the armed forces, agreed with the Norwegian Armed Force about the weakened state of their base. When the Norwegian Army was asked for what they needed to defend their position, they asked for 120 troops and long-range weapons. They also ordered a mobile reaction force, so that allies in the region could assist each other if they came under heavy attack by Taliban or similar rebel organisations.[5]
