another army basic training question!?

okay now i want to know if i would be able to write to my friend in army basic training myself. is there anyway i would be able to do that? someone told me to just right 'private' and then his name and then where it is in oklahoma and all that. but i'm afraid it wont get to him or something. and is that weird if i do that too, like creepy?
