Another APES INSTALL gone bad thread

I had a similar problem after a bar install. I ended up getting a new TBW (the extended one) off eBay for $20. Worked like a charm! That green connector if very easy to damage pulling it through the bars. I even used heat shrink on mine before pulling it through but I think it still separated just a little bit.

Bars look great! Good luck; you'll get it fixed!
 
I have a four day weekend so the bars are coming off and i'm re-doing the right bar, i think i'll run to the dealer and get the extended TBW in the morning.
I just want to make sure it gets done right so i'm not stranded on any rides. I played with the wires a little more and now my orange cruise symbol is blinking so i'm sure i have a short in the handle bars somewhere.
I'm going to try to pull the fuse and reset the pcm to see if theres any help there.

When i go to the code and press for longer than 5 sec the word CLEAr pops up but does nothing else. Ive tried clearing all three one after the other and clearing one at a time by clearing one and turning offf the switch and the code stays every time. I also read that i might be able to reset the TBW by turning on the switch and letting it cycle for about 4-5 sec and doing this four times in a row and then clearing the codes, still no luck. That was for an 08 RK so i thought i would try it.
UTLONGHORN, when you say you used water sealed diconnects that you cut off the plug and crimped each wire with a disconnect? I have plenty of those but not sure i want to go that far.
Installing the bars was a lot easier than i thought and if it wasn't for these hiccups i would had had the job done in about 6 hours just from using pics and threads from here. I know it will be worth it when i'm finished, i just don't care to work on it while i'm flustered.
 
sometimes you are just forced to remove everything and start over. I have done the internal wiring on 3 bikes and each time I swear it is the last. By far the touring bikes with the TBW have been the biggest headache with wiring. One false move and you are in for a long job.
 
FIXED, I cut off the green plug and connected all the wires. All the codes are gone and the cruise control is working again, the bikes running strong again.

I can see about 10% out of the bottom of my left mirror with my hand up and about 30% with my arm down. Right side i have to have the cruise on and drop my arm to see at all. I'm already getting use to just using the right lower part of the mirror but will be getting some bar mounted ones once i see a style i like. I'll more than likely pull the fairing mirrors and fill the hole and then get the inner fairing painted to match it up a little, but thats low on my priority list. Next is a fuel moto PCV, then the chrome front end, and i see some TW-555 cams in the near future. Then mirrors!
 
Looks good. Glad you got it figured out. I definitely recommend to all doing these bars to either change the tbw harness or wire out the plug. Only thing you should have done differently is go with 12's.
 
bars look really good. I'm definately thinking about a bar swap this winter and the 10" Monkey bars are definatley the front runners.
Couple of questions:
1. how tall are you... i'm 5"7 and wondering if i will have to re reaching too far forward.
2. Are you hands still uner the top of the fairing and getting protection from the wind? It gets pretty cold here and if the sun is out i'll ride down to about 35 degrees..don't want my fingers falling off...
 
I'm 5'8" or 5'9" with my boots on. I reach less with these bars over stock, which was one of the reasons i decided to put apes on. You could easily pull then back towards you but were i have them felt the most comfortable to me.

My hands are about 50/50 above the fairing, but i don't feel to much wind on them (at least not in 80 deg weather).

The 12" would have been to high for me here in La., and on Ft Polk there cutting down on apes that are to high. My buddy has a stock handle bar height street bob and got pulled over on post because his badlander seat sits him lower than the stock and that puts his bars out of legal height for the state. He only recieved a warning to fix it but we live on a small post and have two motorcyle post police contracters and they keep an eye on the bikers more than the cars.

At my hight the 10's fit me perfect, i love them. I did notice tonight that if i turn the bars to far to the left that it pulls on the clutch cable and the bike won't move when you give it gas just like the clutch handle was pulled in. It was pulled almost as far as the handle bars could go and wouldnt affect normal riding but making a tight slow turn in a parking lot you might have to let the bars straiten a little before the clutch will engage.
