I have just had my second ankle fusion surgery on December 4 2008. It was a very painful and scary operation. I would like to talk to anyone who has had non-union first operation and can relate to what i am going through. Not only is the pain horrible but i am suffering from severe insomnia too. If anyone can relate i would appreciate it.

Crispycritter: I'll talk to you on the Foot Disorders board.

ras1948: Subtalar fusion is not quite as big a deal as ankle fusion. There is a long recovery time, of course. However, if you are suffering significant pain and difficulty getting around due to problems with the subtalar joint, you will probably be much better off afterward.

I had the ankle fusion and my swelling and pain is gone. It was a long recovery, but well worth it. Make sure you have the best doctor you can find.

:)Crispy critter...I had my Subtalar fusion in September of 2007. I have no pain or swelling in my ankle. They took bone from just below my knee and put two screws up through my heel. I had them removed the following April. I could feel them when my foot got cold. I was the best thing I ever did, having the fusion. I would do it again, but the recovery takes time.

Crispy critter.....I had the subtalar fusion in Sept of 2007. Bone was taken from my knee and put in the ankle with 2 screws. The following April I had the screws removed. When the weather was cold I could feel them. They say one out of four get them taken out after a few months. My ankle pain and swelling is gone and I can do a lot of the things I couldn't do before. The recovery is a little long, but I think well worth it.....
