Anime of the Month Nominations (06/2009)

Since we're on the subject (and thank you, JShaggy for clarification since anime distribution is changing), are download-to-own titles and download-to-rent titles (like X'amd) count as online series?

BTW, Galaxy Express 999 and Old-school Fist Of The North Star are now available to own on the Playstation Store. And since I'm a sucker for Leji, my pick will still be 999.

"Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie (Sonic The Movie for short, also known simply as the Sonic Anime or Sonic OVA) is a two-episode OVA film series based on Sega's best-selling franchise Sonic the Hedgehog. The anime features Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik (Eggman in the Japanese version) and a few supporting characters, such as the human Sara. This is also the only Sonic animated production that features Metal Sonic. This Sonic anime was made in 1996, where, in its native Japan, it was simply titled Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Sonikku za Hejjihoggu), and its two 30-minute episodes ("Journey to Eggmanland" and "Sonic vs. Metal Sonic") were released over two VHS tapes. ADV Films dubbed it to English, and released both episodes edited together as a direct-to-video film in North America on Septeraber 9, 1999 (which coincidentally, is the same day as the North American release of the Sega Dreamcast video game console, as well as the Dreamcast game, Sonic Adventure.) as Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. I doubt that even aired on tv in the US. Therefore, it probably counts and maybe good for final nomination, pending JShaggy's approval.
 
We have ten (10) titles to choose from this month. Voting will end on Wednesday at the time indicated on the poll.

Since we're looking at modifying the nomination rules for the next cycle in July, all merabers/moRAB/admins/etc can feel free to give input on the process, particularly when it comes to nominating online titles.

Since many anime titles have now become readily and legally available on video websites such as YouTube, Veoh, Crunchyroll and several others, it's time to take a closer look at things as to what can and cannot be nominated in the future.

I'm cool with video streaming sites, just as long as it hasn't aired on the instant-DQ US television networks as well (looking at you, Geass, Death Note, Gundam 00, One Piece, and others). Also, there are some anime that are available as download-to-own titles and download-to-rent titles (and in some cases like X'amd, are only legally available as a DTO/DTR title) on services like iTunes, Playstation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, Direct2Drive, and others. They should be treated the same as the streaming sites.

Also, how are we going to treat Naruto Shippuden and FMA: Brotherhood? They technically haven't aired on US television, but their prequel series have.
 
I would definitely go for sub-only DVD's if that's what it takes. In the meantime, I can only hope FUNimation Video will be up soon so that I can watch it and give them money in the process. Not that this will be much of an issue when there's over 100 episodes to watch, but still.
