Anime n00b, what should I know?

As a Miyazaki project, Castle of Cogliostro deserves special note. I'm not the biggest Lupin completist, so I'm sure others will have more recommendations for you, but I definitely enjoyed that one.

And, if I can be entirely self-promoting for a minute, we review lots and lots of anime at Toon Zone News (including my rather harsh assessment of Hell Girl, but there are lots of people who don't seem to mind its repetitive nature and I don't deny that it sure is pretty). A little bit of experimentation with the free legal video services offered by Joost, Hulu, and FUNimation, cable, and Netflix will let you know which reviewer's sensibilities come most in line with yours.

Neither would I, considering it's a seinen fantasy series

Plus, the only two shounen magic girl series are Cutey Honey and Nanoha

(I would count Rayearth, but it's a shoujo sci-fi fantasy mecha series in the style of the style of the shounen demographic)

The novels are published under ASCII MediaWorks's Dengeki Bunko label, which is a shounen light novel brand. So no, it's not seinen, it's shounen.

I forgot about that considering some shounen series are aired on late night, I must have had Haruhi on the brain, since most of the stuff Noizi Ito does is seinen including Haruhi

No, Haruhi is published under Kadokawa Shoten's Sneaker Bunko, which is shounen. Also, the manga adaptations were published in Kadokawa's Monthly Shounen Ace. I find it hard to believe Haruhi would be aimed at seinen. Though the minimum age for the seinen age group is 18, the term normally applies to people already well into their twenties and thirties.

My interests tend to vary. I'll pretty much like any kind of show if I think it's well-made, except for sports (one of my prejudices ). Princess Mononoke is, sadly, the only Ghibli film I haven't seen yet.

Oh, and I already have a definite source for getting the shows themselves. My local library has about 50 shows already in it's collection, and what it does'nt have I can persuade it to buy. My problem has been search methoRAB. I've been picking out shows at random, which is a slow and often inconvenient way of doing things.

You're pretty much like me, I like a variety of different shows, except for sports anime (with the exception of Attack No.1), but I'm pretty much willing to try anything

And Princess Mononoke is probably the only Miyazaki film I liked

And good luck trying out these shows!!

Also I recommend Ninja Scroll which is a pretty good anime movie
