Umm.....

Ok, im comfused. Can I simply ask if ANN is aquiring sequels or is that what is prohibited? (I don't think I've understood the wording of this rule very well.)

[While this thread was made in mind to help you find anime. We are currently not allowing recommendation threads. No offense, but a lot of people are just posting crap these days, often without any effort or even the decency to reply later and give a "thank you" after everyone else's hard work.

For the time being, I'm enforcing a zero tolerance decree. If you don't see the specific genre you're looking for, you will be allowed to ask about a single title only. You may not ask something like "can you recommend me a show like [so and so]?" If you've heard of one, single title and want some clarification, that's all you can ask for. Anything beyond that will be locked and later moved into our Trash forum. Good luck. -TK]

You know, I must've seen at least 10 "looking for anime" threads in less than a week. I understand some people are new to the forums and/or anime, but most of these people can learn to look for their own anime without directly asking every single time.

So, this is a guide on how to search for anime on your own. The following sites can be utilized in almost every way - you can search by title, director, rating, genre, similar anime, etc.

We already know ANN's Top 10 list

Add &n=200 or &n=500 (or any number you want) at the end of URL of each Top 50 lists ([Zalis-edit]to get top 200, top 500, etc.[/edit]).
There's Animenfo's top 200:
Animenfo top 200

Search AniRec for more anime similar to a certain anime you liked. Recommended by people.

For AnimeNfo, look for the "anime" section on the left side of the page (Under the "Search" tab). Click on "Browse Anime" and a list of options of browsing methods should scroll down. List of options include: By Title, By Year, By Character, By Genre, By Cast, By Studio, By US Distribution.

To read reviews from AnimeNfo, go to the webpage of the anime you wish to read reviews of. I will take Shakugan no Shana as an example. On the left side of the page, there is a section called "Control Panel". Click on "Read Reviews".

Extra notes:
You can find the OP/EDs for an anime through ANN's database. Just go to the description page for the anime and it says: Opening Theme / Ending Theme.

You can find which company licensed an anime through animenfo. Same method as above - simply go to the description page of an anime and it should say US Distribution.

You can always read a summary/introduction of an anime at either ANN or AnimeNfo.

Happy Hunting.

Simply put, you can't ask for recommendations on what to watch next. There are other threads listed in the first post of this thread that are categorized by genre and you can check there for info, as well recommend to others.

And ANN doesn't acquire sequels or any other anime for that matter. They stream anime on their site, but that doesn't mean that they own it.

Umm.....

Thanks for clearing that up.

I know they don't own it, but theres a show they have on here for a show I really enjoy. I guess I was just asking if ANN trys to get info for sequels of shows they already of info for.

Some more suggestions:

Look into some reviews at Anime on DVD's Region 1 review section--there's analysis of the DVD presentation and of the show itself.

Link: AnimeonDVD R1 Review List

The Animeondvd main site also has information about release dates, similar to the ANN release list, if you want to know "When is show XXXX coming out on DVD?"

Another good resource of AnimeOnDVD is their Recommendations Forum.

Along with that, there's the ANN review list; if you don't want to look through the review list, go to an anime's Encyclopedia entry and look through the releases and reviews for that series's individual discs.

Other anime review sites:
T.H.E.M. Anime Reviews
Anime Academy
Anime Secrets
Dub Review (focuses on English dubs, same with Crystal Acids)
Anime Jump
The Anime Review
Anime-Source
The Anime Cafe
Animetric (includes adult material)
AnimeReviews (mainly oldschool series, possibly one of the oldest fan-review sites, references #anime@dalnet)
AnimeClassicReviews (old and obscure titles, operated at least in part by Area88)
Anime Boredom (UK-based)

*See the next post for information on ANN's MyAnime list system*

Another great way to discover more anime is to download Anime Music Videos (AMVs) from Animemusicvideos.org

Search through their forums for the recommended videos--by watching them, you can get an idea of the visual style of the series without resorting to "other" methods. Just make sure to avoid spoilers in the videos--if a title is in red on the video info page, it has spoilers, if it's green, no spoilers.

And beyond that, read, read, read...the 10 Favorite / 5 Least Favorite thread is a good place to start, but there are many threads on this forum alone where will profess their love for certain series according to the topic.

EDIT: If you're looking for places to buy anime, you can go to the Encyclopedia entry for a series, click on a link under "related releases" for a volume or boxed set, and see a page with links to various online stores, complete with prices for easy comparison.

For links and ANN user comments on many online anime retailers, please check here in the Retail Forum.

Lastly, try DvdPriceSearch -- you can enter an anime series title to see listings for all releases with comparisons from many stores. If you have other purchasing questions like, "Is this a bootleg?", there is the ANN Retail Forum.

So, ahem, what would I have to do if I wanted to ask for recommendations not by genre, but by a specific element... of the storytelling, I guess? (in this case it's cynicism without comedy elements)

I've got interested in Hell Girl because the ANN review states that the show is very cynical - but then I don't want to necro the horror thread or start a thread just about Hell Girl - and then I realised that I generally haven't seen that many shows where that particular aspect/element shines, so I wanted to ask for opinions and recommendations... Can I therefore start a new thread?

Mister V, this is just my opinion, but I believe that if you create a recommendation thread it could be allowed depending on how well written it was, and how it would attract further discussions(no listings etc.). All for all, you could try doing one, but there's no guarantee it won't be locked. And I really doubt you'd get a reply saying it's totally guaranteed that it won't be locked.

By the way, reading the previous posts of this thread may help.

NO recommendation threads allowed right now!

Okay. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting fed up with these recommendation threads. Not so much the better ones that actually go into some kind of depth, but the ones that just ask outright with no kind of help whatsoever.

And so, I've decided to make this thread with some guidelines in mind to help people make them better. From now on, if you're a regular and know how to identify and report these crappy topics, report them and I will lock and link it to this thread for future reference.

EDIT: This is the one and ONLY rule you must abide by. You may ask about one title, and that's it. More than likely, most of you will fail in at least doing this much, but this is all I will offer in terms of negotiation. If you can't do it, then take an English class and work on your writing skills.
----------------------

1. If asking for a (single) particular title, for example: "Is Azumanga Daioh any good," make sure you tell everyone what you've heard about that title so far (if anything, even if it's just a plot summary), what your expectations might be, and also mention series of the same genre you think could be a good reference source.

ANN's genre search

Although still being polished, the ability to search according to year, genre, and ratings make this search engine one of the best anime hunting tools.

Genre search tips:
- avoid checking genres that are side by side The encyclopedia is separating them to improve precision.
- by using the production year alone, you gain access to vintage lists. By typing the same year on both fields, you can see the best rated titles released in a specific year. Decade is also recommendable.

It may seem like a lot for those of you who are lazy, but you can't get anywhere in any part of life without doing some kind of work.

Do not ask for recommendations in this thread. I will delete those posts when I see them, no questions asked. If you have some feedback that can help in improving recommendation threads, I certainly welcome you to post them here. Thanks.

Would it be alright if I went ahead and made official threads for the mystery and thriller recs since nobody has done so yet? It would be mutually beneficial to other members as well as myself, since I'm looking for more of them and have seen a few also.

Also I'm honored that my list was included, though I'd also warn to avoid reading the comment section if you haven't seen the show yet. Some of them are spoilerific. :)

How to find good anime

If i want to find a good anime i often ask my sister who is always comparing anime or i ask my friends who have simmilar interests as me.
I really like how you can see other people's lists that have simmilar interest.
:D

Yes. And while you're at it, make one for everything else. I don't care if you just put one recommendation per genre, it'd just be nice to get it all out of the way.

Haven't been on these forums for over a year now so forgive me if I'm not caught up on any new rules since then. However, I would like to ask if there are any links to any reviews/opinions on any of Anime to have been released the past year?

Well that depends on where you mean by "released". If you are referring to "released in Japan", then this Wikipedia page may be of some use. But if you are looking for the best Anime that were released in the States in 2009, then try this feature.

Might I suggest you put a warning in the header of each of your lists? That way when someone clicks in to view your list it will let them know right at the top that some of the comments include spoilers.

Hmm...interesting must be one of the new features.

Also as per request I included the genre discriptions in the rec threads I created.

I still can't believe people manage to miss this thread. Seriously. It's at the top, in BOLD! It's like one person a day posts something that contradicts this thread. I just don't understand it one bit.
