Anime Fan Parody Help / Voice Casting / Collaboration Thread (READ FIRST POST!)

Since the Anime Fan Parody and Abridged Series Talkback thread has been so popular, a lot of people have expressed interest in using TZ as a place where they can network with others who might be interested in collaborating on fan parodies (particularly voice casting for abridged series). Up until now, I've been kind of discouraging that just because it tended to clutter things up in the other thread, but I think there's definitely enough interest at this point to be worth a thread on its own.

It's very important, however, to make sure that this thread stays within Toon Zone's strict policy of respecting copyright laws (see the Anime Forum FAQ for more on this). That means that this thread is ONLY to be used for collaborating on non-profit parodies, fan fiction and other such fan works that use only a small percentage of the original work, if any. The general rule of thurab is, if it would get you in trouble for posting a link to it, it will get you in trouble for trying to get collaborators to work on it.

That means NO soliciting for help with fansubs, full-episode fandubs, or scanlations. Any instance of breaking this rule will lead to an immediate warning. If it is broken multiple times, this thread will be closed permanently. So if you have any doubts at all about whether your project is appropriate to be discussed here, give myself or another mod a PM BEFORE posting about it.

This thread may also be used to ask for help, advice, or feedback for your fan parody projects which are still in the production stages.

... I wonder if this is how a spammer feels... Oh well. My last post. NOW you may read it, so I dun feel like an idiot. XD;

Please and thank you!

Okay guys! I'm here because I'm currently doing L.A.R.P.P. a parody of nerdom! I'm currently writing the script and I'm going to need voices as I go along, so I need to know who's up to help?

This is different from abridged series', this uses almost ALL the content available to it, and give it appropriate sound effects and music, while making it funny as hell. It's a high quality parody, and any of you can be a part of it!

Hrmmm... The Hellsing Ultimate Abridged Parody I've been procrastinating on neeRAB a few extras casted, and some possible future characters. Anyone interested in a recklessly impulsive splatterfest of gore, please PM me.

I've been back and forth on a certain idea for months now. Suffice to say I'm once again considering going ahead with it and whilst I might not be up to acting, I can probably at least fulfill the writing role.

I'm going to be intentionally vague other than saying it would be a comedy project and would require both a nuraber of male and female VAs. The major clue I can throw out? It's Gundam related.

If anyone thinks they might be interested, please PM me and I'll provide more specific details. Thank you

... Ok, sorry, I can't stand that this thread is getting so little attention, soI guess this will be the small bump.

I also don't like that very few people seem willing or able to help. (To those unable to help, that's fine, you're probably busy. To those not willing... shame.)

So, all you asking for voices (all of you? XD maybe?) I'll ask around to see if anyone's willing to lend a hand if you still need them. I may send in voice clips of myself, although admittedly I'm not the best actress.

Hope things are going well for everyone otherwise.

In the future, please do not bump this thread for lack of replies. It only annoys people and generally will not lead to any better responses.

Also note that just because we don't see anyone jumping to say "Hey, yeah, I'll do a voice test for [insert character here]!" doesn't mean that that person hasn't gotten any responses, they may just have been getting PMs. Once something like a casting call has been posted and people have had a chance to hook up with one another, there's not really any reason to use this thread to hammer out all the details since there are plenty of better ways to handle that sort of thing.

But anyway, your original question was rather vague, and maybe that's why you haven't gotten any real responses. You ask for help on scripting, but are there any specific issues that you're having trouble with?

Personally, unless you're collaborating with another writer/editor or working with other VAs who will need to know what their lines are, I question the need for writing a script in advance. A general outline is usually more than enough to get you started, and the rest can come as you edit. Done right, that can lead to more spontaneity in the humor, as well as helping you to script to fit your footage, instead of trying to bend and stretch your footage to fit your script.

My advice (if you haven't done so already) is to watch through your entire series with abridging in mind, making notes for how you plan to handle particularly pivotal or otherwise parody-able scenes so that you can plan ahead a little, and then go back to the first episode and just jump right in.

That's how I did it with Berserk. With Gantz, since I was working with Cassius in most episodes and Angel and Masako in some others, I did write out a complete script in advance, and I found that sort of took some of the fun out of it (as well as slowing things down if I found that I needed an extra line while I was in the editing process and then had to wait for it to be recorded and sent to me).

With VEAS, I'm trying to split the difference: I do the editing first, recording placeholder lines for characters voiced by Cass and Angel, then write a script based on that, send them their lines, and when I get them back, replace the placeholders with the final lines, sync the lips, and do the final audio mix. That seems to be working out well so far.

'Course, different people use different methoRAB, and there's certainly nothing WRONG with writing a script in advance if that's how you find you do your best work, so your mileage may vary. In general I think writing is the hardest thing to give effective advice on, because humor is such a subjective thing, and everyone has to find their own style. People will tend to give you the advice that works best for them, but sometimes trying to fit yourself into that mold is the proverbial square peg / round hole.

The best general advice I can give anyone who's just starting an abridged series is to just jump in the deep end and sink or swim. For example, I did the first eight episodes of Berserk Abridged in eight weeks. Sure, some of my early episodes kind of sucked, but working through that much material in so short a time gave me a lot of experience that I couldn't have gotten any other way, and my later stuff was better because of it. Sometimes you just have to learn by doing, and the more you do, the more you learn.

Sorry about that. I'm used to smaller forums, so I guess the "reply via pm" thing didn't occure to me when I posted. Sorry again.

And thanks for the advice. I've got a better ideaof where I'm going with this, so the scripting should be either a little easier or a little harder... please, let it be easier, muses of writting...

Thanks again. I'll be more careful about bumping threaRAB in the future.

Didn't expect I'd use this thread but eh... why not?

I'm working on a Ninja Turtles parody and my crew and I are looking for some good auditions for Leonardo, Michelangelo, Splinter, Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady at the moment. If you're interested send an e-mail to [email protected] or chat with me on Skype my username is sketchor.

Look, I'm doing a Hunter x Hunter abridged, but I SERIOUSLY need an editor. I've been through two already. Both of which were doing a bunch of stuff. I need someone who can do the job well AND at least try to make editing for me a top priority editing-wise. So please HELP ME

Editors are probably the hardest to find-- it's time-consuming work, you can't just crank out a whole episode's worth in a half hour the way you can with voice work. If you don't already know someone who knows/likes your writing enough to commit or else is SERIOUSLY involved in the series' fandom, you're probably out of luck. The other thing is that other than MasakoX, I don't know of any editors who don't fancy themselves writers as well, so someone who can edit and is that into the series would probably be a lot more likely to try to go solo or just cast for voices rather than search for a writer to collaborate with.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend at least trying to learn how to edit yourself. You really don't need to get all that technical with it for abridged series purposes: it's mostly just a matter of splitting and rearranging clips, and the rest you can pick up as you go along. Plus if you're also doing the writing, you can write around your own limitations as an editor. Sure, your first few episodes might look kinda fugly until you get the hang of it, but EVERYBODY'S first few episodes are generally pretty crappy. Good writing and voicework can make up for bad editing more easily than the other way around.

I just had a thought. I was too busy panicking that I forgot that someone on my team already said they were willing to do it if the 2nd guy couldn't. I feel kinda stupid now. Thank you for your insight though, Ben-san (if you're not comfortable with that, lemme know). You always know just what to say.

^Extreme truth.^

Sure, some visual gags can be hysterical, but the basics is all you REALLY need to know.

But, regardless, I see you have the matter mostly figured out, so I guess this is just for anyone else who might need it at this point.

Look, I would like to edit (I could get the delivery of the jokes and direct how ppl say the lines), but due to circumstances (which nobody is interested in and would be taken as excuses by most human beings) I cannot. I (superfluously) messaged Vegeta and Masako and asked them how THEY make it work since we're having difficulty working out the delivery of the joke. It might be pointless since the odRAB of an answer from Masako are 1 in 30,000 and there's no chance in a reply from Vegeta since he doesn't seem to be aware that he has a fanbase or like to acknowledge it. I'm just panicking since people's standarRAB are very high when it comes to abridging these days. That's why I'm never letting you guys see episode 1......NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've seen episode 1.

Actually Masako is pretty good at responding to questions about editing. But he's pretty busy these days so you'll just have to try your luck.

StandarRAB are seemingly higher than they once were but really... don't worry so much about that otherwise this fun hobby enRAB up being a job.

I've seen episode 1 of HunterxHunted too, over AbsentMindedParody, in fact I thought of auditioning when the auditions were being held at Voice Acting Alliance Forums

And give it time Masako and Vegeta will respond eventually

Making a renewed pledge for male and female VAs to work on my secret project. If you're at all interested, please PM me (I'm currently discussing things with one individual so far). It's not a case of just reading lines; all cast merabers will be welcome to weigh in on the script writing as needed. No Lucas directing, I promise
