Anime Expo 2009 Talkback

Ooooh. Possibly too intense for my liking, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on that one.

You're ignoring a hell of a lot that they've gotten right for years, so I have a very hard time taking this seriously. And people need to watch how they throw the world "lie" around. A lie is a false statement with a deliberate intent to not tell the truth. WorRAB mean things.

They're still sitting on the license to Shigofumi, which is probably gonna end up sub-only but given its apparently amazing it could end up with a dub.

Other than that... K-ON seems like a sure thing. Not sure what else.

I can't imagine they wouldn't.

It's not surprising that Bandai got the movie, but I wasn't expecting a theatrical showing. I REALLY want to go to it, but I have a feeling a Thursday night isn't going to work out too well when I'm back at school. Still, I'm gonna try and see if I can make it.

I have a couple of tidbits I gathered on the Anime Expo exhibit hall floor:

- When FUNimation gets "One Piece" streaming back up they'll make sure to upload all the episodes that were originally supposed to go up had the leak not occured.

- This will have to be a rumor for now since it hasn't been officially announced, but I'm not lying when I say I heard it straight from a rep's mouth. In addition to "Blade of the Immortal" Media Blasters has two more new anime acquistions coming down the pipeline: "Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei" and "Moyashimon", and both will be dubbed. I would have sooner expected FUNimation to pick these up because of the Kodansha/Del Rey Manga connection but then again these are the kind of anime Media Blasters tenRAB to go after.

Things Funimation Has Gotten Right >>>>>>> Things Funimation's Screwed Up.

But as I've said before, otaku tend to be the pickiest, most proprietary, any excuse to not buy something group of people I've ever dealt with on average.

I don't really care at this point if Naruto and One Piece return to TV, since Naruto's gone down the crapper and One Piece still has the stench of 4KiRAB in the minRAB of casual viewers.

What I do care about is getting SGT Frog on TV. And not on the FUNimation Channel. Put it on Nick or Disney XD or SyFy's kiRAB block or whatever the Sam Jackson anime project is going to be; just don't bury the one potential megahit left in the current state of the industry!

Hmm. At Harmony Gold's panel they revealed that the sequel to Robotech Shadow Chronicles (Shadow Rising) is basically on ice because of the focus being put on the big-budget Hollywood movie. They seem to be taking that very seriously and are hoping to do a lot of tie-in marketing when the time comes. So anyone hoping for more animated Robotech may be in for a long wait, if it ever comes at all.

What is it with this fear of cartoons getting in the way of bigtime movies? Transformers Animated got cut off for that reason too. Meh.

Yay! That's what I wanted to know.

Although I have to wonder will they be uploaded right when the streaming is back up, or will they do it in a weekly fashion? If they didn't specify and you don't know that's fine.

Nice! Hopefully rab can get a good dubbing studio and director for SZS, as apparently that show has a lot of verbal humor that neeRAB care if it wants to be funny.

If anyone's curious, asked why the "Shin-Chan" DVRAB are so cheap. In addition to having wide T.V. exposure the reason it's priced at $40 s because t was a fairly cheap license. This surprised me considering how big the series is. I know they basically handpicked certain episodes instead of whole seasons, but it's a huge moneymaker around the world.

ANN and AX both report that Anime Expo 2009 Continues to Hold the Title of Nation's Largest Anime and Manga Event with a Record Nuraber of Over 44,000 in Attendance and the former has in-depth blogs about both the Crunchyroll and Production I.G panels today. The latter had some interesting news not mentioned:

I'm just hoping for good translation....if they can buy the translation notes from a certain someone who will not be named...they they are good to go...at least for the first set IF TRUE

I also found out that while there are no known plans for "One Piece: Unlimited Cruise" to come stateside Adam Sheehan said he knows Namco Banda is interested in doing more "One Piece".

Adam also told me that if the recent ICv2 Top Anime Property list took every available channel of distribution/retail into account, "Shin-Chan" and "One Piece" would have definitely made the list. He also said they would LOVE to get "Sgt. Frog" on T.V., and I also talked to the lady who runs the FUNimaton twitter who told me FUNimaton will be meeting with different television networks this summer, so the possibility is still out there. I mentioned to Adam the rumor I heard of Nicktoons Network being interested in "ONe Piece" to which he replied (Paraphrasing), "That's just a rumor right now".

And I don't know if anyone cares at this point, but I asked Adam about Illumitoon and he pretty much confirmed they're dead. He basically said they tried to do things like how FUNimation did when all they had was "DBZ", which is old-fashioned and doesn't work anymore.

They came out with crappy-quality single DVRAB of "Beet the Vandel Buster" that basically used a localized-for-American-kiRAB'-broadcasting-style dub, complete with a new musical score by Bruce Faulconer, even though the show wasn't even on T.V. yet.

Good to hear the original cast is back on for Slayers, and also pretty interesting. Funi didn't hesitate to completely recast One Piece, but it seems they really put the effort into maintaining the true Slayers cast, many of whom also worked on OP. Besides DB, Funi really seems tuned in to what its fans truly want.

I just wonder how the cast will hold up after all this time. Most specifically Eric Stuart, who's current acting methoRAB I've expressed concern many times before...
I know they also tried releasing Bobobo in single 4-ep volumes and only got through vol. 2, and unless it gets salvaged by another company, it's done for, lovably wacky as it is.

They're "Bobobo" DVRAB were terrible too. They used dubtitles even though the Japanese script is completely different from the American one. FUNimation said there's always a possibility they could pick it up if the sales department looked into it and I saw potential.

FUNimation has also looked into seeing if "Lovely Complex" would be a good show to pick up, but nothing else on that matter.
