Animation Revelation's Top 65 Animated Series of All Time

Wait? This is a "Best Animated Series List" by actual fans of diverse animation? Not just people with a ton of 80's nostalgia and have seen a couple [adult swim] shows? Okay, I actually kind of liked the IGN list, but that's what it was, this may be worth reading all the way through.

All I can say is that the best the 80s offered us animation-wise (that we have seen) is contained on this list.

Vague memories and nostalgia for the "old days" did not factor in.

Augh I never understood the appeal of Dexter >< well I liked the Monkey and super hero shorts... and I do appreciate how the character's personality and design inform one another (DeeDee being all stretchy and Dexter all boxy)... but I just never found it funny. I'd put Stickin' Around in its place :p but no one ever heard about that -.-

I wish Cybersix had gotten an honorable mention, I don't expect it to end up in the unseen section of the list but think it deserves some kudos.

My list would probably also include The Raccoons and Jimmy Two-shoes.

Excel Saga? Cow and Chicken? really?

I watched Excel Saga going by word of mouth alone, and I HATED it, just utterly hated it. So boring. I can only see a cartoon like that appealing to people who live and breathe anime (Nothing wrong with liking anime. I love Cowboy Bebop, Kenshin, and FLCL, I'm just saying a show like that, in my opinion, only appeals the hardest of hardcore anime fans and certainly shouldn't be on a list of the top 65 greatest cartoons of all-time. Just my opinion.)

I liked Cow and Chicken. When I was 12. I can't stand the show now that I'm in my twenties.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Dexter's Lab, but I also think that doesn't belong on the top 65 list. The characters were appealing, the concept interesting, the writing (most of the time), great. But the animation is just ugly & horrible. Compare a show like Dexter's Lab to Ren and Stimpy, The Simpsons, Talespin, Animaniacs.

PPG also does not belong in that list, for the same reasons. Also, I feel the writing wasn't that great. Lots of annoying dialogue. It had its moments, so it was far from being a terrible show (I loved the movie) but I definitely think it's an overrated program. "Good" cartoon, yes. just not GREAT.

Batman Beyond is a great show, so I agree with that choice. Space Ghost too.

This is one of the better lists I've seen compared to others (even though I've not seen the IGN list). I'll reserve my judgment for now (probably until the top 10), but I will say that this is quite a diverse list.

And because Ensatu-ken is a part of this I think I already know what's ranking between 1 and 5 :D.

Pretty good list so far. Definently more diverse than IGN's. I;m liking that there;s been a pretty good amount of anime on the list considering how often that;s usually ignored. Given how much it;s mentioned I do expect Ed Edd n Eddy to make it on to the list in some fashion.

It's always astounded me how that show usually never makes it on to those lists despite that most western animation fans I;ve seen at least have some form of respect for the show, was pretty popular, and the fact that it outlasted every other classic CN cartoon including PPG which was almost a cultural phenomenon back in it;s prime.

You'd be wrong. Excel Saga was one of the first anime shows I watched and I liked it, even though I didn't get all of the references at the time. It's not like obscure references/parodies are the only type of humor in the show.

Heh, Well I did shamelessly attempt to force my opinions on everyone else, so my own personal influence on this list is quite undeniable (I mean, what other list like this would you see that would rank something like HXH? :p), but as well as you know me, the list is still pretty balanced I feel since we all gave our own feedback, so things I would have normally ranked higher or lower in some cases got completely different spots due to our combined input on the list. But, if you know me as well as you do, I'm pretty sure that you can predict maybe 1 or 2 entries that will be coming a little further up the list. ;)

Heh, Excel Saga was actually the third anime I ever watched (unless you count Pokemon), and I loved it. It's basically a Japanese [adult swim] cartoon... and a good one at that, not a Squidbillies or a Tom Goes To The Mayor sort of deal.

I'll admit that I was pretty much the only one at AR who pushed for or cared about ES at all (and that's partly because the original manga is my favorite comedy EVER), but considering how memorable and important the final episode was and the fact that it's one of the few legitimately funny anime out there, we all agreed it deserved a spot on the list. It's not like it's near the top or anything.

So far I agree with Boondocks and Invader Zim's placings. Those two are overall great cartoons, and it sucks that there's still some unfinished Zim episodes out there. I've never heard of the anime that made the list, and I've never seen the Hanna Barbara short so I can't comment on those, but I do think that Pinky and the Brain are a bit too high.

Glad to see Superman:TAS, Beast Wars, the 2003 TMNT, Duckman, Batman:TB&TB, and Batman Beyond all on the list. They're all cartoons that I've enjoyed watching.

TMNT 2K3 didn't always get bad ratings. It did very well for a while but eventually that fizzled out and so did the toy sales which of course was the real killer.
