Now you're probably thinking, "Okay now what's up with this thread? And I'm going to tell you why this thread is kind of interesting.

This morning I was watching Spielberg's Pinky and the Brain and of course the episode was appropriately called Brain Storm.

But in the Brain Storm Episode, Brain was devising a way to control perhaps one of the most destructive forms of nature on the planet.. Namely of course:

Tornadoes.

But as I sat there watching Brain try to harness the power of a tornado, it got me to thinking. There have been aniamted shorts and semi full feature animations all over the place that have had at least 1 tornado in them, and this even includes japanese anime as well as animation.

I like to call it this an"Animated Tornado Outbreak."

But let me give some examples here of animated shorts and features and even TV series that have had in them.. tornadoes.

For example, in the 1935 Short called "The Band Concert, Mickey and the major part of the Disney Gang showedup in the short, and The part I'm refering to is when the band starts to play The Storm and a tornado shows up wreaking havoc on the crowd and the bandstand..

Then just 6 years later in 1941 Mickey again faces down a small whirlwind in the 1941 short, Mickey and the Whirlwind. In this short Mickey chases a small whirlwind who's been destroying Mickey's clean up work on Minnie Mouse's yard and after he bags the little whirlwind,An entire family of larger siblings (aka Tornadoes) show up and show Mickey not to fool with Mother nature.

After that in 1948 Disney again released a Short called Melody Time (in the Pecos Bill Segment, Bill rides a tornado and tames it down to size).

In a 1960's episode of Underdog, Simon Bar Sinister creates a weather Machine and from his base on the moon Unleases a tornado on Washington DC. (and yes folks Tornadoes can Occur in Washington and in any state as the last time one went through there was 1811. But it could happen again).

Then I do recall in a 1970's Speed Racer Episode (The Race Around the World, Part 2), Speed and Sparky end up with a number of cars in the Sahara Desert when a huge desert tornado sucks up half the cars, including the Mach 5.

After that there's the 1972 Animated Hour long special called Yogi's Ark Lark made by Hanna-Barbera where near the end of the show, The Ark with all the characters get picked up by a waterspout and flung onto a mountain. (A waterspout of course is a Tornado over water.

Then the next year (or rather between 1973 and 1976)there was a animated Spinoff of the live action show Emergency! on KNBC (Los Angeles) called Emergency + 4! (This one might be rather obscure to a lot of animated fans). But I vividly recall one of the episodes that was called Twister or Tornado).

In that episode Los Angeles Firemen John Gage and Roy DeSoto (Voiced by Emergency! actors Randolph Mantooth, and Kevin Tighe), head to Witchita, Kansas, to help set up the Witchita Fire Department's Paramedic team, when Mom nature raises her ugly head and drops not just 1 but 2 tornadoes in a 30 minute episode (It's rather interesting because they even gave out during that 30 minute show some survival tips for Twisters.)

Of course there's an Episode of Superfriends in which Superman, Wonder Woman, and AquaMan and the hall of Justice get hit by a twister (thanks to Mr. Mxyzlplkt) and are taken to the Land of Oz.

and in an episode of Filmation's The Lone Ranger/Zorro Power Hour on CBS in the Lone Ranger Segement Tonto and the Lone Ranger duck and cover from an Oklahoma twister in a lowlying riverbed.

Of course we can add into the Twister List Episodes from Fox's King of the Hill (Texas City Twister) and MTV's Beavis and Butthead (in an episode called appropriately Tornado. Butthead: Huh Huh I like the tornado!)

Of course I've seen Aniamted Tornadoes in Inuyasha (actually Waterspouts in one episode), and a few other obscure twisters (like in an episode of Winsome Witch, where Winnie gets sucked up by a tornado and gets dropped in the Land of Oz.)

I mean these are just prime examples of tornadoes in animation. But I know that these just barely scratch the surface of this rare yet simplistic form of animation.

But I would like to see if there have been any other "animated Twister sightings" out there..

So there you go all you avid Animated Tornado Chasers.. Find those animated twisters and give us examples other them much like the ones above.. After all I have a feeling I'm missing quite a few (Oh wait.. Jimmy Neutron had an episode where Jimmy created a tiny whirlwind and it turned into a full blown twister)..

But let the "Animated Tornado Chase" begin!

Tsk tsk, all this talk about whirlwinds and no mention of the Tasmanian Devil.

One correction though. The cartoon is called The Little Whirlwind. It's a decent short, but does that perspective thing with Mickey's ears that I never really liked.

There was also an Aladdin episode dealing with tornadoes created from Roc feathers, "Air Feather Fiends."

Well all Taz does is just spin..just a mass of Feet and hands.. No real vortex or suctinon on that animal. Plus, :p

Granted I'm not perfect, but still there's a real whirlwind in it, Not the Psuedo whirlwind of "The Tazmanian Devil."

But then I do remember an Old Road Runner and Coyote Short where Wiley Coyote bought some Acme Tornado Pills and as well as another episode where he ends up in a dust devil (Which is a thermal whirlwind), .as it carries him over a land mine field, ripe with live land mines..

Hmmm I 'll have to watch that one again.. See if there is a tornado / Whirl wind in that one. But I'll take your word for it.

The aptly named 'Eye of the Storm' episode from 'The Zeta Project' is what came to mind, where Zeta and Ro meet storm-chasing brothers who created an anti-tornado device, there was a scene where Zee withstood powerful effects of the vortex while rescuing one of the brothers.

Then there's this one Show that Tonka Toys helped produce called Rescue Heroes (Remember that one?) well in Episode 4 (Which is called Twister), one of the heroes by the name of Rocky Canyon, is desperate to protect a hot rod which has sentimental value from the devastation of the twister. Unfortunately, his childhood nemesis, who continues to antagonize him at every opportunity, is in need of rescuing, as well. Rocky realizes that people, no matter who, are more important than even the most special objects.

And of course at the end of the show, the Usual PSA that tells us the Difference between Tornado Watches and Tornado Warnings and what you should do.

So there's another twister found.

Here's a few more Animated shows involving Tornadoes (and the like)

First, your Edna Mode avatar reminded me of the scene where one of the 'supers' Splashdown (from 'the Incredibles') met his demise in a massive Waterspout.

In 'Pokemon's' episode: Island of The Giant Pok?mon, a huge tornado was created by multiple Gyarados when they started spinning around at such a speed they became one resulting in both protagonists and antagonists getting caught up in the water vortex.

'The Little Lulu Show' episode: The Little tornado had Tubby mistakenly believing Lulu had super strength when she pushed down a huge tree, which was really caused by a mini-twister that passed through the area earlier, later in the same ep. Lulu was holding onto the clubhouse for dear life when another twister hit the area, the boys in the clubhouse, seeing Lulu outside the window while carried by the tornado, believed that Lulu was actually moving their clubhouse, a very funny episode:D

'The Powerpuff Girls' episode: Forced Kin had the Girls outsmarted by the Robo-alien when it created a huge waterspout and then turned it into a fire tornado only to have Buttercup intensify the fiery vortex by accidentally adding fuel to the fire instead of putting it out with water (this after being outsmarted again), using it to destroy most of the city of Townsville.

Whoops I just remembered another one.. Kim Possible: Day of the Snowmen. Ron and Kim were trying to change the weather and Rufus accidentally pushes a button and we have a tornado:

302.jpg

Okay that's 21 cases already.. so already we've definitely got a "Toon Tornado outbreak"*
Stay Tooned to This channel for further reports..

(*'Outbreaks' occur when you have at least 20 reports of tornadoes, but still 21 shows with twisters in them.. that's surprising but I bet there are more out there.

There were two animated versions of the 'Wizard of Oz' that involves the ever famous Tornado scenes, the first was 'Journey back to Oz,' an animated sequel to the original classic film, where another Twister transported Dorothy and Toto back to Oz and at the end, with Glinda's help by Dorothy and Toto returned to Kansas the same way they arrived.

The second was the 'Wizard of Oz' anime series, which follows the original story, in this 1980's anime series, a huge tornado transported the house and it's occupants (Dorothy and Toto) to the enchanted land.

I not sure if this counts as a tornado-related episode in the 'X-Men' animated series, but in 'Time Fugitives,' during a conflict between Cable's freedom fighters and Apocalypse's drones, two 'Temporal' Tornadoes touched down in the midst and began erasing everything, resulting in Cable taking cover from them.

What about other-worldly vortices? In 'Thundercats' episode: Frogman, on the newly reformed Thundera, the Thundercats attempted to stop three Tornadoes from devastating their home.

In the episode: Weathering Heights of the heavily maligned 'Loonatics Unleashed,' series, Ace rescued Lexi from a Tornado created by Weathervane.

In 'Courage the Cowardly Dog' episode: Little Muriel, A tornado devastates Nowhere, the Bagge farmstead, and reverted Muriel into a toddler, Courage reversed the process with another twister.

I recall watching a b & w cartoon of the 'Ugly Duckling' who saved his adoptive chicken family after a tornado wiped out the farm.

I remember an episode of Bonkers in which there were Toon Weather mascots or something on the local news, and one of them was Toony Tornado. At one point, he grows into a fearcer tornado and says, "I coulda played the Tornado in the Wizard of Oz. Instead, they used a two bit weather machine!"

I remember that one as ell.. After all this superhero show had a guy who was a tornadic superhero and a weather man all rolled into one.. How cool is that to have "Tornado" Powers?

:coyote:

I remember Tornado Man from The Mighty Heroes, too. My older brothers and I got such a big kick out of that 'toon.

Also, do any of you older 'Toonsters out there remember a Batfink episode called "Spin the Batfink?" That's where a villain called "The Junkman" unleashed tornadoes on the city to loot banks.
