So I just got volumes 3 and 4 of Futurama on DVD for cheap. I wasn't a HUGE fan of the show, but I'd always respected what it was trying to do. My stock answer was, "Yeah, the show's OK. The characters are decent, but Bender's cool."
So after SERIOUSLY watching the show, my thoughts have changed on the show somewhat. I still think the humour is a bit too clever and geekish for my cruder tastes, but I think it works seriously well as a light-hearted sci-fi adventure show and I LIKE IT A LOT that way.
Also, I found myself liking Fry A LOT more as a character. He's actually a deeper character that I originally gave him credit for, and in my opinion he IS the show's humanity and emotional depth. I give credit to the show's writers that they resisted the urge to make him cynical and mean-spirited to keep up with today's generation of cartoon characters (i.e. Peter Griffin, Homer Simpson, South Park cast, etc). Fry's actually a pretty likeable character.
Bender on the other hand is still pretty funny, but can get a bit irritating when marathoned. I find that many of the show's casual fans or non-fans tend to use him as the sole "good" character of the show, but I realize now that I used to be like those fans before I took a closer look at the show. Bender's a really flashy character so I guess he sticks out to casual fans.
Most of the cast I feel about the same about. That is, I like them or have nothing against them. The Professor's still my personal favourite character.
I was also surprised at how the show was willing to end episodes on a downbeat note, without even a punchline to liven things up (like the Simpsons would still do in their 'emotional' episodes). Of course people mention "Jurassic Bark" as the best example, but the disappointed and heartbroken look on Fry's face at the end "Time Keeps on Slipping" as the show fades to the credits is one of the best representations of what I'm talking about.
So yeah, I respect and like Futurama a lot more after watching the DVDs. It's still not FUNNIER to me than prime Simpsons, the odd really good episode of FG or even King of the Hill, but it's got a ton more creativity, daring and--when it's at its best--emotional depth than even some of those more popular cartoons out there.
