Animated Music Videos-will they make a comeback?

Lol! That's how artists operate - we see stuff that inspires us then go from there; sometimes flat out imitating, others simply including those nifty design elements.

Also, being American doesn't mean you can't draw in manga style - just like being Japanese doesn't instantly make you an awesome artist. Skillz is skillz.

Breaking the Habit? Don't think I've seen that video yet (not a big LP fan)... *wanders off to find it*

Whoa, that is WICKED! Nice rotoscoping too!

I just remembered, Korn has some flipping awesome animated video's too. I used to mute the TV whenever they came on - I don't care for Korn, but the animation was too pretty to change the channel. XD

First comment: My thoughts exactly. I've seen manga straight from Japan, untranslated, and it ain't all good. Sure some of it's amazing, but that's not ALL of it. There are editors out there hand selecting what kind of stuff companies like Viz and Dark Horse pick up, so it's not like there isn't some exclusion involved in terms of what artwork makes it to the states. Some Japanese artists really suck. Does anyone consider Shin Chan to be a welll drawn show, for example? Funny yes. But it's no better than the simpsons in terms of visuals...if not a lot worse. America has PLENTY of great artists still.

Second comment: Freak on a Leash I think is what you are talking about: Todd McFarlane directed it. He produced the Spawn animated series, but he also directs music videos, and highly detailed ones at that. He's yet another good example of a music video animation director. Gotta love those guys.

And yes Breaking the Habit is a perfect example of good Rotoscoping, kind of like certain scenes from Samurai Champloo, and the ENTIRE film of Kid's Story from The Animatrix: Shinichiro Watanabe also directed that one, but I question whether he was the technical animation director of the film, because I've seen that one guys work before. I'm pretty sure he did the O-Ren Ishii sequence in Kill Bill, one of the OPs for Blood+, "Breaking the Habit", AND Kids Story (Animatrix). The guy is a friggin rotoscoping genius. very prolific. He MUST have drawn many of those films' frame himself, if not the majority of them. But he's so egoless, so humble we might never know his actual name, he's so stealthy in the way he approaches his work. It's like he never likes putting his name on anything, even though he directs all of it and lets more famous directors take the credit. I admire that about him, if he is in fact the same guy. Anyone know his name?

He's a good example of how egoless the staffs of many anime truly are. You're changing the fact and structure of animation, and yet no one knows your name. That's awe inspiring. It's a stark and welcome contrast to the egomania of the West.

Not directly, but since music videos exist primarily as promotional tools, one would think they could at least potentially serve as effectively on YouTube as anywhere else (and certainly more effectively than MTV or VH1 considering that YouTube, you know, PLAYS them).

Plus, you don't have to sit through a bunch of video's you don't want to see and pick and choose which ones you feel like watching. :p
