animated movie flops/bombs

Right. It was the 1945 re-release of "Pinocchio" that brought it into profit, but the reason why it bombed at first was mainly due to World War II going on by that point. "Bambi" didn't do so hot either at first. "Dumbo" was lucky, though (maybe it was also because it had the lowest budget any Disney animated film ever had, and the shortest as well?)

"Fantasia" didn't even get successful until 1969! But then again, this was due to the "psychedelic" craze going on at the time.

Is the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie even on DVD? That movie came and went so fast. It literally left theaters and came to VHS with very little advertising, I don't even think people are aware of it existing at this point. It's not even broadcast on television.

I thought the Reluctant Dragon was the one that got money back simply due to it's low budget, though come to think of it, Dumbo probably did operate on the same principle. (I don't think Dumbo was the shortest, though; Saludos Amigos was only forty-six minutes long )

James and The Giant Peach didn't do so well during it's theatrical release. It only made $28,946,127, but the budget was $38 million. I guess this somewhat counts, as most of the film is animated.

Don't forget the Iron Giant. I remember seeing ads for it to come out in theatres in August of 1999 or so and then seeing it hit video shelves less than two months later.

Does anyone know what it made?

I have to say Cats don't dance was a pretty big boob. Was the movie bad? Nope! Its a pretty good film. The reason it boob because not many ppl notice it.

Well they had to nominate SOMETHING. Aside from Wall-E, 2008 didn't have a lot of good animated films. (Igor, Space Chimps, Fly Me to the Moon, Delgo)

Had some more decent animated films come out, I can assure you, Bolt would not have been nominated.

I rented Bolt the other day and hated it. It's a terrible, boring movie that only appeals to 7-year olds.

Sorry, got off-topic.

If it doesn't have 'Disney/Pixar' or 'Dreamworks' name attached to it, it does typically get ignored at the box office. I really can't recall any animated movies not associated with those two studios that ever made a lasting impression at the box office.

I agree, though Coraline did pretty well, didn't it? And that was from a pretty unknown studio, Laika.

I hope we'll be seeing more original works from them in the future.

Anyway, contributing more to the thread. The Wild Thornberries Movie and Rugrats go Wild were pretty big bombs.

Robots and Jimmy Neutron didn't do so well either, did they?

Jimmy Neutron made about $80 million on a very cheap budget, so no, it wasn't a bomb.

Robots made about $128 million.

Neither of those films bombed, they were moderate hits.

and LOL at the poster about 3 posts above us who used the word 'boob' instead of bomb.

Reason because of that is the fact that Batman and Robin came out the same year and we all know how that movie went.... I saw this movie in theaters and it was WAAAAY better than that other piece of crap that other batman movie was.

As said by a nostalgia critic when he retorts to the person who asked why this movie didn't do so well in the box office.

"did you see it?"
