Animated films too painful to watch twice

I think Grave of the Fireflies is worth viewing twice as I had a different response to it on my first two viewing. The first time I watched it, I was intrigued at how the brother and sister were going to survive before the climax approaches in which I came close to tears. The second time I watched it, I found myself more choked up at the smaller scenes of wonder and dissapointment now that I was aware of the climax.

So, if anything, it's worth at the very least one repeat viewing.

I can't believe Barefoot Gen didn't make the list. I've seen that movie as part of a Thursday night screening at my university and to this day, thinking about leaves a lump in my throat. The movie starts off all happy-go-lucky with Gen and his family just living the traditional japanese lifestyle. However, after the atom bomb drops, everything turns dark in a blink of an eye. I honestly can't describe this movie any further without providing major spoilers. All I can say is that the way Gen has to take care of his family amidst the aftermath of the atom bomb is just some of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen in anime. So, not having this movie on the list not only disappoints me...but saddens me.

I wouldn't quite put Barefoot Gen in the same league as Grave of the Firflies only because I found that most of the tragedy in Barefoot Gen was explicit. Of course, anyone who views this film for the first time will be shocked by brutal animation of many people dying in horrific, disgusting ways. But watching it a second time, it wasn't as shocking, but still horrific.

Wow, I actually HAVE seen When the Wind Blows. I didn't realize it until I read the summary, but it was probably more than 10 years ago since I watched it on TV one night. I remember the understated nature of the film as well as its bleak imagery. Very depressing, although not so much a tearjerker as it is chilling.

And even worse, he just listed a title and absolutely nothing else. It's like the "list thread" rule doesn't even exist.

I don't really know anything about "Waking Life." Must not have any animals in it.

I don't think you guys get the point of the thread. It's about animated movies which are too SAD to watch twice, not that are just horrible. I can't imagine anyone crying to Rugrats or Ice Age.

I remember "When the Wind Blows" too, more for the Roger Waters soundtrack than anything else. The ending was unbelievably bleak, even though I knew it was comng.

Very true, but it's not really all that sad or painful to watch.

I'm a tad dissapointed "Plague Dogs" didn't make the list. While "Grave of Fireflies" is indeed very sad, the addest I've seen, in fact, it at least has a couple of nice moments to ease the tension.
The Plauge Dogs has none of that. It's bleak from begining to that soul crushing end. It's very tragic, but not really a tearjerker. I remember what really got me (besides the ending) was Snitter lying in the shed, engangled in the visions in his head and states, "I'm inside my head now. And it's where I should be." You just can't help but agree with him a bit.

I own the DVD (ediited, unfortunately) and so far, I've only been able to see the whole thing once. After managing to see the unedited ending of YouTube, even more so.
A magnificent movie, but it's very hard to watch.

So did I, for a moment. When I saw "Fireflies" had been mentioned, I was about to unleash a Mecha-rant for such an insult until I realized what they meant.

Sorry I knew I should have read the content. I thought they meant painful as it bad as well. I think sad or emotional would have made the title clearer.
