Has anybody seen this show? Seeing as it airs up here in Canada as part of Animation Domination (7:30 on Sundays), I'm surprised there isn't already a discussion about it.
Anyway, here are my feelings on it:
*Apart from Bob and Doug, the characters aren't particularly interesting or funny. Bob and Doug are great though.
*It's unfortunate that Rick Moranis decided not to do Bob's voice. Obviously it's not a major issue, as the duo still works fine, and Dave Coulier does a decent imitation of his Bob, but it's still not as great as it could've been if it was actually Moranis.
*This is sort of related to the last point-- a big part of the original Bob and Doug's appeal, for me at least, was the improvisational aspect, between Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis. The cartoon version feels a lot more heavily scripted, even though apparently most of the voice cast comes from an improv background.
*I really, really don't like the animation, or the character designs. This show is Flash at its worst-- think of basically anything you don't like about Flash animation, and this show's probably got it. Ths is a pretty big problem in my opinion because if the show had bad writing, it could gradually improve, but it's not likely the show will switch animation styles or even improve at all in regards to the visuals.
On the other hand, the writing is very funny, probably funnier than the other shows in the Sunday night animation line-up at the moment (just my opinion).
Thoughts on specific episodes so far:
*Episode 1 -- Maurice LaMarche had a character who featured prominently in the first episode, who sounded exactly like the Brain, so if you like his voice work, you might want to check this episode out.
*Episode 2-- the gratuitous use of unrelated live-action in this episode really reminded me of Freakazoid, in a good way.
My sister and I are looking forward to the new episode tonight.
