Animate Cartoons in the 2010's?

I was looking at the "Saturday Mornings in 2013" thread and wondered what cartoons will really look like next decade, here's my prediction.

1. Everything will be CG or CG characters with humans like Alvin and Garfield.

2. Everything would be anime styled, or dubbed from Japanese.

3. The readers of John Kricfalusi's blog will get their own cartoons, and we'll have a repeat of the early 90s.

4. Everything will be in flash and look like Foster's or Mucha Lucha.

5. A new technique or style will become popular.

I'm pretty sure that not too much will change. There will still be traditional 2D cartoons, there will still be anime/foreign cartoons, there will still be Flash cartoons, and there will still be cartoons done in CGI. Some styles may become more prevalent than others, but they will all still exist.

1. We see this a lot right now.

2. We see this more right now.

3. It's kind of silly to think only readers of John K's blog care about traditional animation.

4. We see this even more right now.

5. Motion-capture? :crying:

He's been whining for cartoons "not being awesum!!1!" for ages now, I don't think he's gonna start any animation revolution single-handedly any time soon.

1. No. CGI is very expensive to produce, and most TV shows simply don't have the budget for it. CGI is hot right now, but it's not going to replace all other forms of animation. That's just paranoia.

2. Again, no. Anime is popular, yes, but it's not the be-all, end-all of animation.

3. Doubtful. The cult of followers on John K's blog just seem to be a bunch of sycophantic ditto-heads who simply agree with every nasty and biased thing John has to say. I have yet to read a single independent thought from any of them, let alone any ideas for new cartoons, not even from John K. himself, which is a shame. IMO, the man needs to stop brooding and get back to work on something. Anything. Yes, he's had a bad experience on TV, no one's denying that, but it's not like he was a saint to work with either. I admire the man's dedication to his craft, but unless John gets off his bitter duff and actually starts contributing something to the animation industry besides sour grapes toward every thing and person that he doesn't like or doesn't follow his personally philosophy to the letter, he really doesn't carry as much water in the biz as he and his followers would like to think.

4. Again, no. Flash is popular right now because it's cheap and easy to produce, that's all. It's not going to take over. There will always be companies with bank like Warner Bros. and Disney who will continue to produce full animation. Traditional, 2-D animation isn't going anywhere.

5. This is the only plausible prediction I've read here. What? Who can say?

It IS amazing that this decade is almost over and we will begin a new decade of cartoons. I hope the `10s will be an improvement. The `2000s weren't really that good. I know there's a lot of young people here, but as someone who grew up in the 1990s I wasn't too impressed with this decade. Yea, there was some good stuff like Spongebob, but for the most part it was pretty disappointing.

Hold on,let me whip my crystal ball out for ya. ;)

I see your way of thinking, original poster, but I'm not going to fuss over things that I'm just not sure of.Flash is big because it's cheap and CGI is big because Hollywood thinks it pwns Traditional.

It's not the animation, people. It's the storyline that matters.

Heck, if all cartoon shows were to become CGI and were as beautiful and cartoony as Horton Hears a Who! and Pixar films, I wouldn't mind the sudden disappearance of traditional work. The story would have to keep my interest locked in, though, as you said.

How about this for the 2010's:
* Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks gets acquired by Time Warner and Warner Bros. revives Tiny Toons and Animaniacs together in a new series. Time Warner would even plan CGI specials and/or direct to Blu-Ray sequels to Dreamworks CGI movies Over the Hedge, Kung Fu Panda, Bee Movie, and Madagascar (Shrek will not be part of Time Warner's Dreamworks since its still with Universal).
* Toon Disney and Jetix split up into their own 24 hour channels.
* Playhouse Disney and Disney Channel split up into their own 24 hour channels (and Playhouse Disney launches a bedtime show similar to PBS Kids Sprout's Good Night Show)
* Noggin launches a bedtime block similar to PBS Kids Sprout's Good Night Show
* Canada cartoon/kid show studio Cookie Jar (best known for creating cartoon shows like Marc Brown's Arthur, Doodlebops, and World of Quest) gets acquired by NBC/Universal with some Cookie Jar produced shows added to NBC's Qubo block and Qubo digital channel, and Universal strikes a deal with Marc Brown Studios to use Arthur characters and a new Arthur themed kids land area for the Universal Hollywood, California and Universal Islands of Adventure Orlando, Florida parks (Also - though not cartoon related - NBC/Universal acquires all the Busch owned theme parks - including the 3 Sea World parks and the 2 Busch Gardens theme parks)
* FOX cuts back its Saturday morning kid shows block to a 3 hour E/I deal with Sony and adds to Saturday mornings a FOX NEWS SATURDAY show.
* MY NETWORK TV launches a 3 hour E/I teen aimed show block plus a revival and acquires the rights for a new version of Soul Train following the 3 hour block.
* ABC Kids Saturday lineup gets cut to 3 hours and ABC Kids airs a new version of American Bandstand.
* CBS will cut the Saturday Early Show to 1 hour and air DIC produced revivals of Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats and Get Along Gang as part of the Kewlopolis block. CBS will also air as part of the Kewlopolis block a Saturday Morning kids version of The Price is Right with kids coming on down as contestants in a format similar to the 1994 nighttime syndicated TPIR that was hosted by Young and the Restless star Doug Davidson that lasted only 4 months (Would Doug Davidson be perfect for a KIDS TPIR host? Or maybe hire J.D. Roth to be the KIDS TPIR host?)
That's all, comments welcome...

^Again, this is more of a wish list than predictions, but what the heck....

Had a feeling you'd work that Tiny Toons/Animaniacs hybrid show idea in there somewhere....:anime:

There's not enough programming on either side for that to happen. (Well truthfully, Toon Disney could exist on its' own, it did before Disney acquired Jetix, which is just a block.) Besides, I don't think Disney's in a hurry to create another animation channel.

Again, Disney has no reason (or desire) to create a new channel, and Playhouse Disney is a block, again, there's not enough programming for it to be on 24/7.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to see a news block on Saturday mornings? More importantly, why would FOX create a network news telecast for Saturday mornings when they don't have a network news telecast for any other day of the week?

Keep the dream alive...;) though it's my understanding that KEWLopolis is aimed predominantly at girls, so I'm not sure if revivals of any of those shows would fit their format. (The only one of those shows I could possibly see working on KEWL would be The Get Along Gang, since it was likewise based on a greeting card line and there was talk of a revival a few years back.) Plus, I highly doubt CBS would cut back their news show. If anything, I could see them cutting KEWLopolis back for more news first.

It wouldn't be American Bandstand without Dick Clark, who wouldn't be up to the task of hosting after suffering a stroke. Anyway, who needs American Bandstand when we have Music Television?

Wow, you guys must have taken my John K comment the wrong way, I know there are a few John K "fanboys" who will agree with almost everything he says but the majority have their own opinions about the cartoons. I must say even I think half of what he says is complete rubbish, but he is a very talented man and a great artist and has taught alot of people how to draw. I must say though, since I started reading his blog in 2006 or so I've been able to draw much better. I'm guessing a lot of you might not like John for hating Family Guy, Animaniacs and Kim Possible, which I understand because he's trashed a lot of things I like such as the Pixar films.
If you look in the comments to some of his posts and see the blogs there you'll see some really visually talented people who don't just draw big eyes and boogers, which is what a lot of people think that's all the Spumco style is about.
I mean come on, wouldn't you like to see an original eye-catching cartoon like Ren and Stimpy on TV again?

An original eye-catching cartoon? Yes. Something else like Ren & Stimpy? No. I was never a huge fan of the Spumco style, myself. I'm not a hater, mind you; I've just never gotten into Kricfalusi's stuff.

FTR, I have nothing against John K. personally, as I've never met the man. All I know of him (aside from his work) is his colorful commentary and his reputation within the industry. While I'm not into his cartoons personally, and can't say I agree with all of his viewpoints and politics, I can at least admire the man's dedication to his craft. Which is all the more reason why I feel that he really needs to stop sulking about the snow job that he feels Nick gave him and start producing something again. If he's been so burned by TV that he never wants to go near it again, then why not produce a webtoon or a series of books or something? Anything would be preferable to just spewing bile on your blog, at least I think so.

But I feel we're getting off-topic now, so I'll just leave it there.

Just as a last response, he is working on a webtoon. George Liquor. He's asking around his blog for artists and posting sheets on how to draw the characters and how he wants backgrounds and etc.
