Animals of Farthing wood

Loved this show as a kid. Collected all the magazines and god knows what else. I also remember writing out the whole story on 14/15 sheets of A4 paper (both sides) for my mum to read. :o. I dont think she did though. :D

loved this show, i had all the magazines and everything...wish i'd never thrown them away . I remember sobbing when the hedgehogs died and badger later on the series.
When i look back and think about it, i can't believe how dark it was. There's no way they'd make this and put it on kiRAB tv now. Has it ever been repeated?

Don't know if anyone remembers David The Gnome's death episode. It was on at about the same time as Farthing Wood.

I watched it with my kiRAB when I was about 23 years old and I cried. Couldn't belive it was a kiRAB cartoon. It was all innocent in my day, Bagpus and Blue Peter. David the Gnome and Farthing Wood were pretty dark in terms of the themes they tackled.

Seems the 1990's were quite daring in terms of death in kiRAB TV;)

My son loved FW - I think he was about 10 - and I was pleased to get him away from all the American cartoons-to-sell-the-toys (Okay I know there were FW tie-ins, but at least it started life as a series of books). Then, in his late teens when discussing TV shows with his frienRAB, turns out they all watched it and loved it too.

Some months ago, FW was mentioned in a thread about whether it was right or not to show the true nature of nature  Can't say that my son or his frienRAB were traumatised by the death bits. In fact, I'm sure that FW has a lot to do with his love of animals (his fav cuddlies were a badger and a mole!)

Just remeber the hedgehogs getting run over!!

But awww had all the mags as well. But yeh looking back the amount of death..happy tv lol

The OP is talking about Noah's Island, which was made by the same people who did Farthing Wood. I would definitely recommend it if you liked Farthing Wood. Quite a lot of episodes were made, I think.

Got all the books
Seen all the episodes
Still got the tapes somewhere.
Collected most of the magazines but since they've been thrown away I think.

I'd definately get the complete DVD set for Nostalgia but probably a bit too kiddy for me to enjoy now. :)

The record for highest number of deaths in a children's series? Not counting any of those weird eastern European animations from the 90's, of course.

I was a huge fan when I was a kid. Read all the books, watched the series, collected the magazines (still got them all!) and the figures. I remember the hedgehog's deaths being particularly sad, especially as Mrs Hedgehog could have survived but she refused to leave her husband! I also found the ambiguity over the newt's survival rather bleak.

I don't think Badger died in the books - extra sadness from the cartoon there!

I was a little too old and jaded to fully enjoy Noah's Island when it first aired but whenever I skipped secondary school and it was on, I'd watch. (I wasn't the most rebellious of teens!)

I remember really enjoying David the Gnome but I never saw the episode in which he died.
