Just this weekend in Nebraska a man shot, a golden retriever in the leg with a arrow and was left for dead in the street. The dog was wearing a collar and was found late at night, dead. This is just an example of how far animal abuse can go. Animal abuse is common and happens everyday and the penalties for it are not as serious as they can be. There are several laws in Ohio that “protect” animals but most of the time they fall through and the punishments are cut to where they are hardly anything, a slap on the hand with a tiny fee and a couple of hours of community service. For someone to purposely hurt an innocent animal is beyond wrong, these animals are made to suffer their owner's anger and it is very serious.
These abusers need to be punished as though they have hurt another person because it will eventually come to that. Seventy-five percent of violent offenders have early records of animal abuse and most domestic victims have claimed that their attackers have hurt animals. Animal abuse can relate to other kinds of abuses because the abuser has to be in control of the victim. With each state having their own laws, the severity of the punishment depends on the location of where the crime takes place and most states have weak punishments. It is unfair for someone who has hurt an animal to only have to pay $750 dollars in Ohio where someone in Texas has to pay $4,000. Both of the people have committed serious crimes and they should suffer equal consequences for it. In order to be fair each state should have the same laws with the first charge in hurting an animal is $8,000 and nine months in jail with counseling and community service. In killing an animal there should be a fine of $20,000 dollars with two and a half years of jail time, parole, community service and a year of counseling. Each abuser can not have an animal and can not have a job that involves animals. If the offender is charged a second time, the consequences will be the same as killing an animal. I hope there are harsher laws in the future and that people will realize that animal abuse leads to human abuse and even murder.
