If you take allergy tests for dogs and cats and they come back you are not allergic to dogs and cats, can you still get an asthma attack from being near a dog or cat? Thanks.

It wouldn't be likely though the animals fur may have something on it that you are allergic to. Were you tested for any other allergies? Say, if you were allergic to dust mites and they were on the cat's fur, then yes, that could trigger an attack if allergens trigger your asthma. But it would be the dust mites on the cat, not the cat itself that is causing the issue. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks so much for the quick reply.

I haven't been tested yet. It is my love of dogs and cats I asked. There is a tuxedo cat around my building that I was feeding for the upteenth time. S/he looks exactly the tuxedo cat I had four years ago. I gave him up because toward the end of the two months I had him, I noticed my breathing not the same. I gave him to an elderly lady on Christmas Eve 2005 after reading a newspaper article where a person died from asthma. I had been diagnosed with asthma in 2000 and never knew you could die from it. I gave up my cat in a fit of anxiety and shock.

I have never had a problem with the cat around my building (since he's been here from the summer). I also never had problem with the local supermarket's cat--ironically another tux cat. There's also a Garfield looking cat in a local store that I also get close to and have had no asthma attack. I am guessing I have no problem with them because they are in wide open spaces (the outsides for the building cat, and the hugeness of the supermarket and store for the others.) I live in a small studio and figure whatever happened with my cat was due to the smaller space of the apartment.

The other issue is that my asthma is so mild, some doctors say I am asthmatic and some say I am not. I say I am because I do get chest tightness and get relief from an albuterol pump. The tightness could be anxiety which I have, and not cardiac (thanks to many cardio tests.)

If I move this year, my wife would like to get a dog. I love them and cats. I wouldn't get testing until the move was immenient.

Sorry for the rarabling. :dizzy:

So you aren't on a daily med for asthma? You really should be. THat would probably take care of the whole problem. And maybe toss in a Zyrtec if you still have a problem around cats or dogs.

And you evidently don't know much about asthma if that TV spot scared you. I strongly suggest you see a pulmonologist, get properly evaluated, educated and on the proper meRAB.
