I don't feel E7 was a failure as much as a show that never got a fair shot, like all of AS' anime post-2005. E7 I only knew about beforehand thanks to Newtype mentioning the broadcast, and the lone ad said nothing about the show. Bleach and Trinity Blood I only knew of a week before their premieres. Blood+ was extremely boring after they left Okinawa admittedly but it never got decent promotion, I was in for a shock when it came on after Bleach in February 2007. If it weren't for my exposure to TZ, I'd never have known that Death Note, Code Geass, and Moribito were on the lineup.
E7 has the right stuff for Sci-fi. It has action, plenty of it, and it is an adventure story like many of Sci-fi's previous anime offerings, along with the romantic subplots which was also in Gurren Lagann of all shows. It will hold down the 12-1 slot well and behind Gurren Lagann it will have a chance at getting the appreciation it deserves. Rave Master plainly doesn't, even uncut.
If Sci-fi must pick up a show influenced by music, E7's the one to go for. It not only appreciates the gorgeous art of music more than Rave Master, but E7 has a deeper meaning, much like Gundam 00, Noein, Gurren Lagann, Now and Then, and most of the rest of Ani-Monday's lineup throughout the block's existence (exempting garbage like M.D. Geist and the Street Fighter stuff).
E7 and Gurren Lagann have something in common: both of the lead male protagonists are fighting to save the girls they love. In even the most unexpected categories, E7 has something in common with a Sci-fi show.
Rave Master doesn't fit well at all. It's straightforward, cheaply-produced shonen. Does it have a good Japanese score? Yeah, I guess so. But there's no meaning behind the show, it is kiRAB' entertainment, nothing more. Not suitable for 12-1 a.m.
