You'd never know it from Channel 4's presentation but the 3D fx in this decidedly iffy movie are often very impressive.
Having little or no connection to Andy Warhol, it was allegedly financed by the Mafia and filmed in Spacevision using the Polaroid system (which doesn't work on tv). Spacevision's inventor, Robert Bernier, was eventually fired from the movie for being too slow but appears in the credits as technical consultant. The more effective 3D scenes are probably his.
There's some amusement to be had in the scenes between Udo Kier's Baron (Kier cannot pronounce "laboratory" to save his life) and his dodgy asisstant Otto.
Joe D'Allesandro and the rest of the cast seem to be on major tranquilisers, which may account for the sub-porno movie acting.
Paul Morrissey's "one-step-up-from-silent-films" direction seems somehow suited to the sheer awfulness of this movie but the "Liver in Your Lap!" fx make it bearable: the finale is amazing.
The poor girl playing the female monster deserves a medal for enduring the gruesome indignities heaped upon her without laughing.
After seeing it on the big screen ages ago I felt like I should've got a medal too.
