I have had Windows Mobile phones ever since they first came on the market but am attracted towards Android. My question is how well does android (HTC Hero & HTC Sync) really sync with Outlook (in both directions). There is much on the web about this but I am not sure what to believe. I need to sync (USB is OK) - Contacts, Calendar, Outlook Emails and if possible tasks and I want this sync to be in both directions (ie mobile to PC).
I dont want to change from Outlook to GMail. I have several POP accounts that I would also like to access when mobile.
any advice would be appreciated,
Julian

With Android, you don't even need to be near a computer to have your information always in sync. Get a gmail account and your email, contacts, and calendar are always in sync with your gmail account via the phone's data connection. You can access your information via the internet on any computer. And your gmail really is in sync - you delete a message on your phone - its deleted online and vice versa. My Blackberry couldn't do that. You can use Outlook for your email, contacts and calendar by setting up gmail in the account set up so you don't even have to connect your phone to the computer. Your Facebook contact information can supplement the contact information in your gmail account, even displaying profile pictures with incoming calls. Give into Google and I promise you will not regret it. I love having my data always in sync automatically and available on the internet. I forget my phone - I can get my schedule for the day via any connected computer or device.

Welcome Julian and scoswald to the Android Community. What scoswald said is totally correct. To add to what was said though, try and go for an Android phone running 2.0 or above (the Droid / Motorola Milestone, or the Nexus One) as these also have native exchange support which may be helpful. There are also some (paid) apps that give exchange support.

A quick search on Androlib shows:

Thanks for your replies. I am running Outlook but not with an exchange server, it is working with several POP accounts and I need to keep this as my main email/contacts/calendar system. The ability to sync Outlook with GMail is interesting but I am not sure the best way to set this up.
I have looked at "Google Apps Sync" and it would appear to do everything I need except I think it only works with Exchange systems. Is there a version that works with a non Exchange system?
For things other than email CompanionLink looks interesteing.

Unfortunately, I don't know. I don't use Outlook or Exchange for my Calendar or Contacts any more, as Google's offerings seem much better to me.

There are ways to export you contacts and calendar, and import them into Google via the website, but I don't know of any way to do this without moving to Google for everything. But them, I've never looked.

Perhaps someone else can help?

Great I try bit by bit to do the change to Google's but at this time everything is in Outlook.

But Like before may thanks for you great help,Thanks extorian

Hi all,
Thanks for your advice. I now have a Hero -EXCELLENT! HTC Sync is OK (would like file and task sync) and GMail works well. In general, Android is brilliant. Who needs an IPhone...

If your running a < 2.0 Android device, Exchange support sucks bawls... But, if you get touchdown, it pulls all your calender stuff and mail and contacts and notes wonderfully. $20 well spent on an app.
