Android to Nokia: "come on baby, just let me put my software in your hardware"

Not going to happen and thankful for it. Believe it or not the europeans being a leader in mobile phones is a good idea. I dont want a phone that is all flash and no function. nokia leads, they dont follow. if they went the android route, soon everything would be like the home theatre/stereo market, **** tv's with bad color and contrast, **** stereos with no power or any sound quality to speak of, crappy underdeveloped high definition media. all flash no substance, no thank you.

A little pride in front of short term profits is what Nokia has and will hold on too. The company has to much history to become an also ran oem hardware maker.

htc, motorola, samsung, sony ericson all shills for googles advertising empire.
at least apple is actually innovating even though their phones are more flash then function.
android is just an iphone clone, for the purpose of advertising and social research, google should pay you to be one of their lab rats.

nokia leads allright...in destroying shareholder value, in delayed product, in half finished consumer OS, in murky OS strategy, in smartphones that don't light up and notify you when an email comes...

Android to Nokia: "come on baby, just let me put my software in your hardware"

First, ain?t gonna happen, second, just think about, will nokia destroy the Ovi ecosystem (last 5 years working on it) to use android (google ecosystem + M$ patents)? Third, Techcrunch must write about the iPhone, at least they know a little about it, other than iPhone news their site is full of crap.

N8 was launched on time. N97? N97mini? E71? E72?

Maemo / N900 might be "half-finished" to you, but I can still do things that no other smartphones can do.

What's so hard to understand about the Symbian and MeeGo strategy?

The last 3 Nokia devices I used, all lit up just fine on incoming email.

Well it's no secret that I think Nokia's OS strategy is a complete mess so I think putting out at least some phones with Android would be a great idea. They can still continue to work on Meego/S4/whatever and if it turns out to be a world-class OS use it on their future phones. But right now Nokia is producing good hardware which is crippled by sub-standard software. Speaking for myself I am thinking of buying a phone in the next few months and if the N8 ran Android 2.2 it would be probably be at the top of my list. However there is no way I am buying any phone with S3. What's the other side of the argument? I suppose if the N8 was Android that would deprive S3 of some momentum. But let's face it; S3 is dead in the water and has zero momentum with developers anyway. The N8 isn't helping S3; rather S3 is hurting the N8.

Gingerbread is right around the corner, so if Nokia did release Froyo on the N8 like you suggested it would be like a year (minimum) before they would get to porting Gingerbread onto it. (also while you are at it ask a N97 user about how cool is the V3 firmware on the N97 which was released ages ago)

They don't need Android screwing up their time and resources that they badly need with Meego or (trying to) keep up with Symbian...

It takes at least 6 months to develop a handset. Nokia doesn't have the time for that. If Nokia plants to put Android it needs to join the OHA first.

I think this is more likely talks to put Google Mobile services (GMail, Search, Maps, YouTube) into either Symbian or Meego, all of which can be done far quicker and adds value to the platform.

Nokia missed a perfect opportunity last year if it had sold an N900 class device with Android. If it had dominated Android sales over HTC and Motorola, it would have Google right at the balls and dictating terms to them.

I like Nokia phones and Im going to buy an N8. Ive owned Nokia phones for a decade.

With that said, the delusion is strong in this thread. News flash...Symbian is dead, it has been for years. Why else is Nokia losing marketshare daily? Maemo/Meego are an attempt to keep up...so far, Fail.

Nokia hardware is awesome, I wish it had a better OS. Android would allow the N8 to become a mainstream iPhone/HTC/Droid competitor. Im actually quite surprised that ATT is going to pick up the N8 as it is. Truly its all about the camera.

I can't wait to get my N8, tho I fear Im going to be sad they didn't put a 1Ghz processor in it. Nokia has been losing b/c it cuts corners and won't compromise to make consumers happy.

Seesh - the 1GHz demanders are also delusional (I'm lookin' at you, Surfnsun, not the delusional Android demanders everywhere).

When you aren't running everything through a silly extra layer of virtualization/abstraction, 680MHz (or less) is Plenty. Trust me - my phone has a 228 MHz processor :p

Seriously, it's not how many MHz you have, it's how you use it that matters!

Have you used the phone yet?

I haven't, but Ive seen some of the videos. The verdict is out.

When I get mine, I'll let you know.

When you bought your last laptop did you demand a slower cpu? Doesn't make much sense does it?

As to the laptop question, I made the smart buying decision to pick the best price-value point by not demanding the fastest, most cutting edge processor (and thereby avoiding paying the premium for it while also suffering the power-over-consumption consequences!). So much for that argument.

I also bought a Windows 7 based system, which is less hardware-demanding than the previous OS - Vista. (I know, I know - I could go one step further and use Ubuntu, and still may, someday - but back since the 'good ole' Slackware days, I haven't felt too hot for Linux because Windows ... suffices, at a lower effort level)

n8 is delayed...too little too late and not a factor in the USA market.

congrats on being a tinkerer and beta tester for nokia. it's perfect for people who want to tweak their phones and figure out how to do "stuff". you may love nokia os but the vast majority of smartphone customers ( I don't consider Series 60 a smartphone as it is currently defined by google and apple) looking for a NEW phone don't want anything to do with it.

I understand the Nokia OS strategy just fine. I understand that is misguided, muddled, and due for a revamp very soon...

my 5230 even after getting an update, does not light up when a new email comes in when using nokia messenger.

Late to the market != delayed. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - the world is a bit bigger than North America.

Congratulations on getting spoon fed by your operating system. I want a platform that allows me to do whatever the hell I want. S60 was around before iOS and Android...yet wasn't a smartphone platform? You're taking the definition of smartphones...from companies who's offerings don't include full-blown multitasking? That look down on side-loading applications and charge for third party applications to do things they should do out-of-the-box? Right-o.

What about the strategy needs a revamp? Symbian on lower-end N-series devices. MeeGo on high end devices. I guess it's not as clear as "am I getting Android 2.0? Maybe there's a snowballs chance in hell I'll get 2.2 and then 3.0. Rejoice!". It actually forces you to THINK about how you'll use for device? To save money if you don't want a high-end one? It gives you options. Oh no, choices, run away.

you seem to be in favor of the way Nokia has run it's business in supplying you with great products. I don't think there are many of you around. Alas, Nokia is bound to change into something you are flat out gonna hate---a company that has products people actually will buy, yes dumbed down smart phones that just "work", like the ones Apple and Google's partners sell. Nokia needs to do this for survival. but in changing to a company that makes things that people want, it will alienate those who love to tweak, who love to beta test, and who love to tinker for hours on end till it's just....right.
