Android Dev Phone 1 on Verizon possible?

Hi,

Since Verizon's network is open, would I be able to use the Android Dev Phone 1 (an unlocked version of the G1) on Verizon? I'm not in T-Mobile's 3G area and need 3G for IT work. I really like android, and most of my friends and family are on verizon.

I am currently under contract with a "family plan". What sort of plan would I need to have unlimited data? I assume it would be cheaper/necessary for me to get a individual plan. Can anyone tell me the cost of such a plan? Would I have to wait until the agreement ends? Also, what would be the activation cost for a non-verizon phone?

Thanks.

You could not place any form of the T-Mobile G1 on Verizon Wireless' network. They are both incompatible networks. By "open" they mean open to phones from other CDMA carriers, T-Mobile is GSM. This means T-Mobile uses SIM Cards and Verizon Wireless does not. Verizon Wireless uses CDMA and EV-DO for 3G. T-Mobile (like AT&T) uses GSM and EDGE for data.

The networks are not interchangeable.

You guys need to get your technology facts correct... ATT and T-Mo don't jsut use "GSM and EDGE" for data.

2G on ATT/TMO is GSM+EDGE, 3G is WCDMA.

2G on VZ is CDMA 1x and 3G is EVDO

Anything any carrier has that is "3G" is CDMA... but not all forms of CMDA are compatible. EVDO and WCDMA are very different beasts, different bandwidths, etc. But the basic technology is using codes to seperate users rather than time (like in GSM).

GSM is not progressing beyond 2G... in fact the new 4G stuff (either WiMax or LTE) is all based on CDMA as well. Just the next iteration with new stuff to make it go even faster.

Sorry, your confusing technologies.

WCDMA is not used at all in the United States. It is actually a specific form of GSM that is used in Europe. It is able to place a lot of calls on one tower unlike our US version of GSM.

Also, LTE is based on GSM...NOT CDMA. That's why all of the confusion was occurring when Verizon chose to try and use LTE as their 4G network.
