Android 3.0 Gingerbread details: 1280?760 resolution, 1Ghz minimum specs, mid-Oct. release

By Staska on 30 Jun 10
We?ve been hearing about the upcoming Android Gingerbread release in Q4 for a while now. And also how the new Android user interface will blow our socks off.
Still, everyone?s been pretty sketchy about exact details of what?s actually coming to Android Gingerbread. Until now.
Mobile-review.com?s Eldar Murtazin just went and spilled a boatload of interesting details about the upcoming Android Gingerbread release. Don?t run searching for these details to his blog or his main site, you won?t find anything there yet.
Eldar did all the spilling in his Russian podcast ?Digestiv?. It?s audio only, so Google Translate won?t help you much. If you do not speak Russian, you?ll have to trust me on this
Her we go:Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December ? for the Holiday Season.Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5? and higher. (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU?s are coming)New 1280?760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4? and higher. (Anyone thinking about Android tablets now? )Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery App on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions, etc. Natively, through all the UI.Android?s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2Eldar also confirmed my musings about the death of third party User Interface shells like HTC Sense, MotoBlur, etc;. Android 3.0 basically kills the need for them.

Yeah.. that's great.. and share your opinion too.

BTW I'm amazed with the date they've mentioned which is after 2 months and how will they come up with new OS that sudden?

its not all of the sudden, googles been working on it for a bit now. theyve even told us a taget date near the end of the year. btw, this is still a a rumor.

Yeah.. still no official announcement has been made. BTW google is not going to make any announcement until it's near to release as they've did on froyo time. Now I am waiting for a leaked update. Will try that out.

I see all the Hype but really have seen no concrete examples of what Gingerbread has going for it... I see lots of new/high Hardware specs.. but thats to be expected.. And what is up with the new interface that will eliminate the need for third party launchers?
Damn..I have to wait till the Holidays now for a new Handset..and i was just going to cave in on an X.. Grr..

I call shenanigans…Im tired of hearing it will look like the gallery, screw that. i want to see actual shots of it in action with full home screen, etc. and dont tell me its not possible. if its gonna drop in 2 months better believe there's a build they are testing. Yet there is still no leaked shots, until any of those emerge, this is all rumors as far as i see it... while it is great to hope and speculate on what "might" be its just unconfirmed hype…and if I sound angry I am, I want a got damn android tablet already.

So far gingerbread is looking weak. UI imorovements is nothing. Its gonna feel like going from 1.5 to 1.6. Froyo is the big one. I could be wrong though.

I hear ya jas0n!! I do not believe it will drop in 2 or 3 months either!

Hell, Froyo is not even officially released for most devices and that was actually announced by Google 2 months ago (or whenever that was way back then).

Until I see some screenshots and hear something concrete on this I will not believe any release date speculation. Besides, once Google does officially announce the OS half of the Android community will be waiting for another 2 months until they get an OTA update. [which is why I root and will load a custom ROM]

I agree that this is all stupid rumors. I don't know about everyone else but my droid is at 1.1 ghz and the gallery app is ridiculously slow to load up. I would hate to have my entire phone run anything like that. However I do believe that there will be a ui over haul. More so than previous updates. Google has already called out all the rumors and said that until you hear it from them, its all unreliable bs.

It is a kind of nice thought that all these custom UIs might die with Gingerbread. While I don't find anything wrong with HTC's SenseUI or Samsung's TouchWiz 3 in general, it's the delay they cause in updates that bugs me.

I think htc is better about updates than we think. There's so many updates with android that it gets money and time consuming to accomidate all of them so I'm betting they wait it out for more significant updates and push those out. Why update all hand sets to 2.0 when 2.1 was right around the corner, ya know? And the final 2.2 source code hasn't been out too long has it? Even the n1 from my understanding had a second ota update for froyo due to bugs, right?

Yeah HTC has brought out 2.2 pretty quickly. They're getting better at it whatever the reason is. However, not all HTC handsets that will get 2.2. are getting it now. It's just the HTC Desire isn't it? Some are scheduled for December. That's a 6 month delay on the Nexus One.

I've heard its rolling out to all the ones that are getting it at all. The incredible, the evo...I'm pretty sure those are all the devices that are even supposed to get it. What do you mean 6 month delay for the nexus?

Well I'm basing it on this article: http://rabroad.com/htc-expects-to-have-android-2-2-updates-finished-by-christmas-20100706/

That article says two things of note:

And... getting back to the original post in this thread. Mid-October? The article I linked there is quoting what HTC has been told by Google:

So I have to agree with other people in this thread - more likely to be January to March 2011 than Mid-October.
