And the Oscar goes to...

I'm about due to start a thread of this.

My predictions:
Ratatouille- Will win
Beowulf- Nomination, unless seen as too "mature" for the category
Simspons- Nomination, if not Surf's Up (Audiences liked it more than Surf)
Surf's Up- Nomination if not Simpsons (Critics liked it more than Simpsons)
Meet the Robinsons- Nomination if not Beowulf
Enchanted- ?
Bee Movie- Academy doesn't like Dreamworks anymore
Shrek the Third- Might because of first two (while doubtful, see above)
TMNT- While I would like it to get a nod, it probably won't
ATHF- Jerry Beck hated it and even joked about it geting an Oscar, and Jerry is always right
Happily N'Ever After- CG movies just don't seem to make the cut like they used to (in short Jimmy Neutron wouldn't be nominated today)

Your Predictions?

If Ratatouille were to lose out ATHF or Shrek the Third, I think I'd gag.

Beowulf could be a contender, but I really have to see it before I can rank it in any way. I'm sure that from a technical perspective its quite an accomplishment.

My predictions:

Ratatouille- Will win
Simspons- Nomination
Surf's Up- Nomination

Ratatouille deserves to win, It's the best film I've seen this year. Brad Bird deserves a best director nomination, but it will never happen.

I'd like to see Paprika get a nomination, but I'm got going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

My Predictions (so far) for nominations:

-Ratatoullie
-Shrek the Third
-Meet the Robinsons

Of course, my money is always on Pixar. True, Cars wasn't Pixar's best last year, but this year I'm fully convinced Ratatoullie will take home the Oscar. I thought last year the films were judged on their technical achivements seeing as how Cars had new HDRI, Monster House had motion controlled cameras, and Happy Feet had motion capture animation. Of course, I was wrong about this once Happy Feet won for obvious reasons which still makes me gag.

My predictions:

Ratatouille - will win, though not my personal pick
Meet the Robinsons - should win, but won't
Surf's Up - Loved it, and deserves a nomination

Ineligible for the Animated Film category, since there's only going to be 11 minutes of actual animation (a film needs to be 75% animated in order to be eligible).

BTW, anyone else want to see the "Movie theater rules" song from the ATHF movie get nominated for Best Song. :D

Ratatouille: Definite nomination and likely win. It all adds up. You've got Pixar, a critically acclaimed movie, and a director whose last film won in the category.

Meet The Robinsons: I think it'll probably get nominated unless Disney decides to put all its muscle behind Ratatouille.

The Simpsons: This one is iffy for me. I don't really see the Academy nominating it because it's a movie version of a TV show (and they haven't nominated one yet) but people love The Simpsons and it's a critical and commercial success so a nomination could happen.

Surf's Up: I think it's got a shot at a nomination. It was a pleasant surprise for those of us who saw it and the reviews were good.

ATHF: They say never say never but this is not getting nominated.

Shrek The Third: I don't think this one will get nominated. I know it made a lot of money but something just tells me that people might be a little over Shrek.

Bee Movie: If this movie is well-received, I think it has a good chance. The trailers are funny and whenever Jerry Seinfeld does anything that isn't a stand-up routine, people take notice.

Beowulf: I don't see it getting nominated but that's only because it's not a family-friendly film. The Oscar win for Happy Feet (and nomination for Monster House) may have signaled the end of the exclusion of mo-cap films but the Academy has a long way to go before embracing non-family friendly animation.

Tekkonkikreet: Won't even make a blip on the radar. In a side note, I think Sony made a big mistake in trying to get Paprika nominated last year. It probably would not have gotten nominated this year either but the critical response to it was good and it would have more of a chance now.

Anyone who thinks Simpsons won't get nominated is on serious crack. Not only did it do very good critically (89% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it deals with an enviornmental issue. Why do you think Happy Feet won last year?

Anyways, my predictions go as:
Ratatouille
Simpsons
Surf's Up

Bee Movie might get nominated, but we'll see. And I believe the changed rules do not allow Beowulf to get nominated. But, yes, it will be a close race between Simpsons and Ratatouille. However, the Rat was an animated classic and I think the Simpsons will see it as merely an honor to be nominated. I mean, can you think of any TV-to-Film adaptions that can boast being nominated for an Oscar? (besides South Park, of course!) I'm putting my bets on the Rat to win, and I'm also giddy to see what the Academy may ask the Simpsons cast to do. (maybe Bart presents an award?)...

I seem to remember a report about the Acadamy tightening up the animated feature category to exclude mo-cap after the Happy Feet criticism... can anyone refresh my memory?

They kind of tinkered with the rules, but changes are vague.

Anyhoo, I can't believe what I'm hearing about Beowulf probably won't be nominated because it's not family friendly or being too mature. That's practically saying animated movies should be just for kids.
If anything the movie shouldn't be nominated because they use mo-cap and the characters are photo-realistic and look just like the actors, making me wonder WTF would they animate in the first place.

I think Ratatouille and Surf's Up should be nominated.

If Beowulf is a REALLY good flick, I could see it being the second animated flick nominated for best picture. If it is indeed that good.

If it's three movies:

Ratatoulie - PIXAR. Safe bet for at least a nomination.
The Simpsons Movie - Well-received and critically-acclaimed. Plus, Hollywood loves the series.
Bee Movie - Two words: Jerry Seinfeld. A lot of . . . no, I won't say it. You can't pay me a million dollars to say that there is a lot of buzz about Bee Movie . . . dammit! Dreamworks would lobby harder for Bee Movie this year than Shrek The Third, which was almost universally loathed.

If it's five movies:

Surf's Up - Another critically-acclaimed movie, but got lost in theaters unfortunately.
Beowulf - A potential dark horse candidate, it could be the first truly mature animated project to be a nomination, but it probably won't.

What I would pick to win: The Simpsons Movie. An Oscar would look good surrounded by all of those Emmys.

What will win: Bee Movie. Oscar voters tend to remember and pay attention to movies that opened later in the year as The Incredibles did in 2005, Happy Feet did last year, and Bee Movie will do this year.

Really? I thought it was considered generally pretty meh, and Simpsons has a much higher Tomatometer.

Beowolf isn't eligible due to the new rules. However, it has a chance at a Best Special Effects Oscar and I could see it as a dark horse nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category as well if it's as good as it's been sounding.

I can't say I'm surprised everyone here has ignored Persepolis, but don't count it out of the race. It was the first animated film ever to win the Jury prize at Cannes and it has a cozy little Christmas release which should put it on the Academy's radar. If Triplets of Belleville was able to work up enough hype to get a nomination, this film should be able to as well. Add in the movie's politically important story and amazing source material and it probably should win.

If not, Ratatouille will win. Critics absolutely loved it, and an Oscar would help justify Disney's purchase of Pixar if there's any fret about Ratatouille's disappointing box office. I want to see The Simpsons get nominated, but when has the Academy ever given any props to a TV adaptation (the Jimmy Newtron movie came out before the series did). Bee Movie has a chance even though it doesn't look too good... and so does Shrek the Third. Don't forget Shark Tale's nomination in 2004.
