And the latest unnecessary remake planned is...

Necessary remakes? I'd say that the new 'The Hills Have Eyes' made the audience question its own voyeurism and provided more horror than Wes Craven's ponderous original. Bogart and Huston's 'The Maltese Falcon' proved a necessary remake, while Christopher Nolan's versions of the Batman universe made whole groups of cinema fans completely revise their opinion of Tim Burton as having filmed the best Batman - which was some achievement.
I suppose the necessity or not of a remake is not something you can decide until after the remake has been made. What one can do is judge a remake to be superior to the originals in almost every way - style, story and acting - which, I believe, the films I cited to be.

You make some good points, but I must disagree about the Hills Have Eyes remake. Personally speaking I thought the "normal" family in the remake was the most stupidest I have ever seen...that's not to say the "normal" family in the original had more than a shared brain cell between them, but the one here really took the biscuit and quite frankly deserved to be offed. Of course stupidity in itself is not new to filmaking per se as stupid people e.g. the teen cheerleader who goes down to the the black cellar all on their own is a common cliche in the drive-in style slasher/horro film genre, but I felt continually shouting at the completely moronic behaviour of the "normal" family ruined the film for me.
