An author's decision, should I post my story online?

I LOVE to write, the thing is I don't know if I should post it online. Someone could steal my idea and I don't want that, I'm confused. Should I or should I not? I need answers.

I don't think you should. It's too risky for your story to get stolen or get its ideas stolen. If you truly love writing and want it to be seen by others, try and get it published. But don't put it online for the whole world to see because someone might steal it.

Geko,

If your story is any good at all, you should try to find an anthology to have it published in. Get someone you trust no to give you a bunch of lip service to read it. If they give you an honest opinion, then I would find an anthology to submit your story to.

You should know that once you put your story online, you can't say that it was never published. Most anthologies want stories that have never been published. Some of them 'will' take reprints.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Get someone to give you an honest opinion. That's exactly how I started out.

I also worried about this, but I still ended up posting my story on Fictionpress - only the first draft, though. So much will be changed second draft around that I'm not really worried. However, that's a big risk I'm taking. If you don't want to take that risk, you could always find some people in your area whom you know you can trust to help you through. Support, for a writer, is needed. It's a long journey to the end. Either that, or find one internet buddy you can trust who also writers to exchange chapters and the like through e-mail. Make sure they also feel strongly about copying and wouldn't do it themselves.

Still, there's a risk in everything. It's what makes life worth living.
