I'm trying to remember title of a book, at least 6-7yrs old. "The road" plot seems very close. People 1st start out in guarded communities to keep infected out, but they soon get in. Main character a teenage girl. She manages to assemble travel companions from the few who realized attack was iminent.
On travels, they run across groups of canibals. Are traveling to a safe camp in the mountains????
