My son has an '04 Neon. He was checking and replacing fluids in his auto class and forgot to replace the radiator cap. Two days later we notice the overheating after driving only a few miles per day. We noticed the lack of cap so we topped off the coolant, there was still some coolant left in the car, and we replaced the cap with a new one.
Test drove the car and it still overheats, very quickly, within 2 miles.
Question is to where to start looking? Thermostat, water pump?
Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks.

thermostat is always a great place to start and is actually very cheap and easy to fix.

thermostat in backwards?

Also, if the cap has a bad seal, it may only boil once the car is turned off. I had this experience as a Neon owner.

Make sure all the coolant in the reserve reservoir hasn't been all sucked up into the system. Add more if it has.

Get a Haynes manual for the Neon. It's the first $12 for maintenance I always spend when I get a new car. It has troubleshooting tips and gives a description of the normal operation of the system.

the water pump and thermostat r to very good but it depends what do yall do to keep it running if it is the refueling of water then its the water pump but it could also be low oil or bad oil
