Amsoil experience

After I had more time later on to ponder my experience I have come to the conclusion that it was indeed a faulty oil filter that could not keep enough oil for the top end at start up hence the loud tapping until the oil got flowing and then it got quieter. But there again, it was an Amsoil oil filter I was using at the time. Must of had something to do with the anti-drain valve in the oil filter. I would bet anything that Dave's issue was probably the same. Especially since no damage was found to his engine. But having said that I am just not sold on Amsoil anymore. For me, the Amsoil was always a lot darker than what I find with the Mobil 1 when I checked the level at various times. To each his own I guess.

I read in another post where it is OK to mix oils. If I pull out 2 quarts of Amsoil and replace it with Syn3 do you think the noise would go away? I can't help but think that the clattering (or however the noise is defined) can be good for the engine. Has anyone done this?

I have the same issue now with an Amsoil filter....Going to replace it tomorrow with a HD filter.....

It just started about 3 weeks ago....Tapping at start up and after a few miles, everything quiets down. Filter has about 2200 miles on it....

ai did not have any amsoil available to me on my last change but have used amsoil in many of my toys with no ill experiences. Actually had nothing but good things with amsoil in my atvs and other toys. As far as Syn3 well that is another story. Ran it for two changes in my electraglide. I had had enough. The top end would start to make noise on even 80 degree days and my oil pressure would drop dramatically even at highway speeds. I was given a chance to try Schaffers for free and have now found my new oil to use from now on. Cheaper then amsoil and no engine noise even after saterdays long day in 90+ degree temps and no wind. Oil pressure never dropped one lb either.

Change it out Bro. I really believe Amsoil oil is probably fine to run in the bike but when they say only run HD oil filters...I'm sold on that statement now. I'm guessing with a HD oil filter I would probably have never had my problem.

Anyone notice that the OP is running the SE 259E cam? .579 lift isn't easy on lifters especially when the oil gets hot and thins out. I'm running .555 lift cams and get tapping at startup in 100+ temps, but it quiets down after 10 seconds and the pressure has had time to build up. When the temps go back in the low 90's everything is quiet all the time (same oil as the 100+ temp).

I guess I'm just saying that higher lift cams, performance motors, etc can all contribute to extra heat and noise. YMMV.

If I might ask? Why did you switch to Mobil 1 if the Harley Syn served you so well after the tear down? Personally, I had a leak free evo motor that I ran Harley Dino 360 in and then switched it to the Syn III when it came out. No trouble. Then everyone convinced me to try Mobil I 20/50 Motorcycle oil prior to a trip where it gets hot. Said it was cheaper and better. That evo started leaking after less than 300 miles on the Mobil I and was making a lot of extra lifter noise. My buddy gave me some Amsoil in the middle of the trip and I switched the oil. Motor quieted back down and before I got back home, the leaks stopped. I never looked back and I have gotton 100k trouble free miles on Amsoil motors since. Every motor is different I guess.
