Amitryptyline and insomnia

Some people take Benedryl anahistamine before bedtime for insomnia instead of taking an anti-depressant that possibly could cause many problems.

I took Amitryptyline for fibromyalgia and the first dose was a downer, second dose worse. Never had anything to take me down so fast and furious in my whole life.

If possible stay away from anti-depressants for insomnia, try something else.

You might check on safety of Benedryl, I would think it to be better than tangoing with anti-depressants.

If possible try to solve reason for insomnia instead of resorting to drugs.

I have fibromyalgia and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, and take amitriptyline for insomnia with no adverse side effects. While it is difficult to get to sleep at night, the amitriptyline helps me to stay asleep through the night. I use a low dose of clonazepam to get to sleep. When I first started using amitryptyline, the full 50mg dose really hit hard, so I experimented with cutting the pills in half, and then into quarters, which helped tremendously. If you can take benedryl, so be it. I have asthma, so I am unable to take antihistamines on a regular basis, as they dry the mucous in the lungs.

No, benadryl is not an non drowsy anithistamine. My husband's oncologist prescribed benadryl to help him sleep during rough times. You might want to check it out instead of the amitryptyline.

Hey!
I have been taking amitryptyline for over 5 years now and cant sleep without it. its not like it knocks me out for 10 hours ( that would be heaven) but it keeps you asleep for 3-4 hours at a time and your not awake in screaming pain trying to sleep. i have tried over 80 medications in the last 12 years of bein in this pain and thats the only one that helps. I also take tramazpam which is sleep drug when i havent slept and need something to knock me out. hope that helps
