Americans need to study History better in school?

being asian i had to cut into the conversation

everyone in my English class argue with me that the "Buddha" ( the enlighten one) was fat. They are thinking of the "Happy Buddha " not the starter of Buddism. even the teacher agreed that Buddha was fat.
How could he be if he basically starve himself.

btw, we are in 10th grade .. shouldnt they learn it by now ?

in 10th grade we dont learn about thomas Jefferson

We learn about Hinduism, Jainism, Christianity, Buddism, etc.

maybe you're thiking about elementary
 
I think many people get confused because the term 'Buddha' can mean so many different people.

It is not only the title of the founder of Buddhism, Siddartha, but also the name of the well-known fat idol, and also the title given to those who have achieved the last stage of enlightenment.
So yes, Buddha was fat. Siddartha was not, he was all skin and bones.

While this particular instance could be a misunderstanding, the truth is that yes, most American schools are very uneducated in other religions. Especially in the 'Bible Belt,' you'll see that ignorance is the stance most (even teachers, unfortunately) take toward religions other than Christianity.
 
Yes they should teach more. It's bias to say the least, AND it's terrible how lacking in substance the history lessons are.
They are wrong, of course.
 
In Ca you learn the very basics of world religions in 6th grade and then in 9th grade and thats about it.

Most probably dont really care too much about what Buddha actually looked like or did unless they thought it was going to be on the test.
 
Maybe he was fat. Did you live back then. They have NO true facts how he looked. History is great.And just becuase your asin doesnt mean
1) you can pretty much say Americans are History dume
2) know everything
3)Plus being 12 i probley know more then u
 
The best you can do is show up with information to back-up what you are saying.

It is rather pathetic how little religion is even touched upon in school, but unfortunately I think that you will find that misconceptions about most religions are prevalent in all societies regardless of age groups.

I see a lot of people with statuaries of the Happy Buddha in their gardens or bathrooms (tacky). I don't think it's common knowledge what the Buddha looked like.
