Is the education system and media (by spreading fear and therefore control) both to blame for the rise in the number of people who are germophobic? There are germs about, but the levels have to be kept in context don't you think?

IT was more our commercialism. When hand sanitizers appeared on the market, American shoppers dutifully bought the latest thing.

Fortunately, it's been proven that the hands are very dirty and so this is good thing, for once. How 'bout when the Big Gulp was introduced in 1984-that helped eevery body'swaistline, didn't it.

Fear sells. If a company thinks they can profit from people's fears, they'll do it. Buying antibacterial soap makes people think they've got some control over something, in a world where we have very little control over anything.

Also, we have a phobia about death in this country, so if we think we can prolong our lives by wiping out every germ in the world, we'll give it a shot.

And you're right about keeping things in context. We actually need some of the germs we encounter.

However, I don't think the education system is feeding the fear as much as the media and businesses do. The education system is actually trying to encourage people to think. What a concept!

Beats me.

But, I'm sure the educational system is to blame for people who don't know the difference between "Americans" and "American's".
