Picked this up a few days back (Region 3, but will play on UK blu ray players...plays fine on my PS3).

Very, very dissapointing picture quality. Even worse than Gladiator. The amount of grain alone on the opening daylight shots of the moors is staggering, huge black dots everywhere.

The darker and indoor scenes fare slightly better, but it's a pretty poor effort.

Thankfully the sound is much better, great use of directional effects and general ambience, plus the music comes across very well.

Another saving grace is a new 80 minute retrospective documentary, with Landis, the cast, Baker and most of the main people involved in the making of the movie, including some of the bit part players. There is also a new doc on the effects with Rick Baker, and it also has some BD live stuff and is D Box motion enabled...though I have not looked at those yet.

All of the extras from the previous DVD SE are there as well, including that bizarre and rather unfunny set of silent outakes.

But it's a shame that the deleted sequence of the 3 tramps being mutilated is not present, despite Landis stating in the doc that it was in the movie for some early test screenings. I guess it has probably gotten lost in the mists of time.
 
...and I had to look up 'D Box motion enabled' myself!

Apparently it's similar to one of those chairs you can buy to hook up to a games system, which will move, rock and vibrate along with the action on screen.

Quite why you would want to spend ten grand (yep, that's about the cost of them) so you can sit in a vibrating chair watching a movie like this is beyond me...
 
Still sound's like a great package ted,I find a lot of old films suffer when given the old blu ray treatment,if i remebmer it did'nt look that good when i watched it hd dvd.Just the way it goes.;)
 
I watched it at a frienRAB house and the PQ was absolutely terrible. Surely these film studios should know that if a print can't be transferred to HD quality, then what use is releasing it? Then again, because it's Blu Ray, some film fans think they have to buy it.
 
I won't be buying the BR edition, mainly because I don't have a BR player but I am desperate to see the documentary on it. Saw Landis on about it the other week and it sounRAB really good, anyone know where I can see it (the documentary)?
 
There is no Region 3 on Bluray.

Region 3 is a dvd coding.

Bluray is Region A,B or C.

Perhaps you should check it is Blu and not dvd.

Its a Universal title anyway and all their Blurays are region free .

The HD DVD was very poor - I was hoping the Blu might be better so perhaps stick with the dvd on this one for a bit
 
So its not actually Region A then as its region free

Does it say Region A on the back of the box.

I've found that for Bluray most companies give accurate labelling and if its region free they will lable it as ABC , unlike dvd's where there are countless Region1 discs (mainly from warner) that are also coded for R2 and sometime R4 aswell
 
The copy I have has "REGION - A" on it and I have to agree I found it highly disappointing for a blu-ray after I was impressed by the halloween transfer.
