American Gangster

I've just had the chance to see this movie and I thought it was superb.

It's set in the 70's and based on the true story about Frank Lucas the gangster played by Denzel Washington, and Richie Roberts played by Russell Crowe, who plays a cop trying to find out the identity of the main player.

Very powerful performances from both Crowe and Washington as well as a very strong supporting cast.

This is a must see movie and I would highly recommend it....has anyone else managed to see this yet?. :)

No I havnt seen it yet but I have seen the trailer and it does look very good. However its not out in UK cinema till the 16th November!
I do know that a DVD perfect copy of the film has been leaked onto the internet so I guess that is how you have watched it!

i saw the trailer for this and it looks quite interesting. it seems to be quite reminiscent of 'The Departed', which is always a good thing. would anyone who has seen it agree with that?

I've seen it too. Very Good. Out of the two, I'd say it was more like Donnie Brasco. The violence in it is minimal, given the subject matter. But really it's a film in it's own right, a charcter piece, following in parallel, the progress of the two main characters. I'm not a massive fan of Washington, but when the charcters right for him, as it is here, I think he can be brilliant and Crowe gives a real and understated performance.

I agree. Both Washington and Crowe came into their own in this movie.

It sort of reminded me of The Sting in many respects as opposed to the violent gangster type genre like Goodfellas etc.

I give it 10 out of 10 as this year's big movie.

I too have seen it, and though it is good film - I found myself wondering halfway through why Russell Crowe was doing it - as the above poster has said, a good yet understated performance though nothing that really stanRAB out and the hype in the papers as this being his best performance since Master and Commander - mmmm - maybe y'all can decide! (especially since I have yet to see him match his performance as Hando!)

Being toted as this years 'must see film' - and nominations for Oscars for both Washington and Crowe - seems like a lot of hype - now don't get me wrong, it is a good movie - I just don't believe the hype.

I really enjoyed American Gangster. The acting by Denzel Washington and Josh Brolin (the badass Detective Trupo) was excellent. I prefer a film that isn't hyped up unlike those that are, *cough*, The Departed.

8.5/10.
