I was very disappointed in this film it was totally inaccurate in its portrayal of Frank Lucas an the 60s/70s era lifestyle ...

I expected better from Ridley Scott....:(
so many bad mistakes were made in the filming it never really felt like the 60s an early 70s US,
just because you put actors in the era clothes an drive a few 60s cars about , doesnt make it a period drama ,
look how well Scorsese did with *The Godfather* films, in this the back drops were so modern it was awful ,
an if I saw 4 black men with afros that was it ,lol please Every *cat* in those days had a mighty afro ...an the way the blacks spoke it was so contrived ,

I could forgive the sloppy backdrops an issues with the black portrayals, but Denzel Washington just sleep walked his way through this film ,an dont get me started on the waivering oz accent of Russell Crowe....

This was a brilliant True Life story well worth telling but this dire film did it no favours at all , if you want to find out about it read the book "The Return of Superfly" by Mark Jacobson

The film was worth 4/10 for attempting to tell this story ...

Scorcese? The Godfather films? Is that meant to be a joke? I preferred Coppola's "Goodfellas" myself:D

I thought American Gangster was pretty good. Not a classic, but not terrible. I would put it more at 7/10. Interesting story well told. The reason Lucas and his brothers didn't dress outrageously was they were trying to keep a low profile:

it was when he put on the big fur coat at the boxing match he first attracted the attention of the FBI

what are you talking about? It's all about Coppola's "Taxi Driver" now that is a classic gangster flick.

Al Pacino was superb in it. ;)

I liked American Gangster, certainly doesn't deserve a 4/10.

You shouldn't compare a "book" to a "motion picture" it's an unethical comparison. You will always be disappointed.

"I've never read a Harry Potter book in my life, I've seen all the films though, and judge them as just that... films. Goblet of Fire may have been a wonderful book, but the film I saw was full of plot-holes. I'm not going to seek out the book to fill them in. I don't have the time to be honest. That is the director's job. The fifth film was a vast improvement which supports that statement."

Coppola
I apologize here , was mixing them up ..:( :( ..lol

but the facts are true this was a bad film , dont beat me down guys on my poor post ...SORRY ! ;)

As I love films I post on other film boarRAB .....
I have been supporting this movie til seen it ...an kept away fom the review thread ...lol give it a chance ;)

an was blown away how rubbish it was ....
I tried to be the *popcorn* viewer but was reminded in most outside shots this is modern day , the actors *jive talk *...
still give it a 4/10 ...it could of been a Scorsese Godfather, or Coppola's Gooodfellas ... ;) lol

btw ..
*Frank and his boys didn't dress outrageously
was they were trying to keep a low profile:*
this wasnt what I meant it was the every day clothes too 70s for 60s ..

an on this point the Real Frank WAS the On Screen advisor ..which makes it more a shame ..

he is a superstar at the moment in the U$ with kiRAB an Media ..
as one ret NY cop at the media film board I go to said ,
"If frank had been taken down earlier then the whole of the US wouldnt be affected now ...He brought the huge killer to US an killed thousanRAB through his evilness...
an we make deals with this Devil ... "

on a flipside Frank left Prison an then did try to make a few major huge import deals , one was a oil tanker full of H .....lol
Can you stop the crim ..?
NO ... was busted .. an he rolled over ....
he plea-bargained again an took all the 2001 mafia families down (they havent recoved ,lol ..feRAB stop them growing lol)

As a Grass he (he says he isnt ,lol )is a wanted man an so the Book ...

Sorry my faux pas...

;)

I thought it was superb myself, thought the ending was a teeny bit rushed considering how long the film was thought.

Overall I enjoyed it.

It wasn't tthat good, without giving anything away the film should have started halfway through and the ending should have been a bigger focus of the film

Saw it last night, really enjoyed it. It's no 'Goodfellas', but what is? :p

I thought Denzel Washington was very good as Frank Lucas, and despite the criticism in most reviews that i've read, i actually thought Russell Crowe was good too, it didn't seem like his character was under-developed at all to me.

Personally i'd give it about a 9/10 :)

Just been to see it and got to say i really enjoyed it
When you think of some of the rubbish films about Vietnam
Full metal jacket/ Platoon among them.
This was better than those two so i give it 7/10
Not so sure about Russel Crowes american accent tho.

Crowe has never done a proper US accent but he's still perfectly acceptable in my book.
He didn't do an Italian accent for Gladiator and no one made a fuss!
Probably because none of the other actors bothered either.
Denzel put in a very good performance I reckon obviously relishing playing a bad guy rather than a stand up guy - he certainly didn't phone it in. Perhaps some people were expecting OTT Nicholson-isms rather than a subtler, more rounded villain?
It's very watchable even though we've seen the same rise and fall story many times before. 7/10 from me.

personally i thought the film was not too bad at all, quite long but not too bad. i would give it a 7/10 also as i agree with the statement that it did not have the 6-s/70's feel too it

I saw it today and enjoyed it. It was long but there seemed to be plenty going on. The pay off at the end was quite amusing.

Russell Crowe was pretty good but I was a bit transfixed by his bulging gut.....:D
