American Dad Renewed for 2012-2013 Season

Cool.

I can say, without a doubt, that American Dad is the only show on Fox Sunday's that I make a point to tune into on a regular basis. Everything else in that lineup is so hit or miss; Family Guy is really inconsistent, Cleveland outright stinks, and I just haven't gotten into Bob's Burgers yet (granted, I've missed a few episodes, but the ones I've seen haven't stuck with me). Note that I don't even mention the Simpsons in this discussion, as I haven't cared a lick about that hollow ghost of a series in over 3-4 years.

I'm glad to see we'll be getting another few seasons of AD. I've had a chance to catch up on a few missed episodes from the previous two seasons on Adult Swim, and I think this show has greatly improved over the years. Definitely looking forward to more.

AD is my most favorite of the three Seth shows, because frankly, I feel the humor is much more subtle and subversive on that one. That's why I think it doesn't get as much love as FG does because honestly it may be a little too smart for the room in some ways.

Simpsons and Cleveland Show ain't going nowhere. Say goodbye to Bob's Burgers though, American Dad's renewal pretty much feeds Bob's Burgers to the cancellation bear, which is fine by me because that show is awful IMO.

Fox isn't trying to bury American Dad. They're trying to replace it because it's number four on the Animation Domination ladder. It's a subtle difference ;)

Seriously though there's no reason to worry about American Dad's fate until a new animated sitcom comes along and actually does well. Sit Down, Shut Up wasn't it, Bob's Burgers wasn't it, but if they eventually find one American Dad will be in trouble. The Cleveland Show didn't affect it because King of the Hill was still bottom of the ladder at that point and the one that was getting moved to 7:30 on a regular basis. So until something successful walks along it's just fine.

So everyone is assuming that this must mean that they're getting rid of Bob's Burgers? Is there any evidence that this is in fact the case? Have Bob's ratings been that much worse than Cleveland when it was at 8:30 this time of the year (by which I mean, when it wasn't benefiting from Football lead-in)?

The Cleveland Show had far better ratings than Bob's Burgers does at 8:30, even now at a worse time slot, TCS does slightly better. The only episode of Bob's Burgers that really did well was the premiere, after that it stunk.

I wouldn't be surprised if they kept Bob's at 7:30 like they've done with American Dad this season, but I think they should just cancel it. It's a terrible show with terrible artwork and even worse writing. I watched the premiere episode and the one after that and didn't laugh once either time.

I'm not sure about that either -- if that's true, then why was Target unloading American Dad DVD sets $10 for two last Christmas? Ten bucks for two.

I don't know how Bob's Burgers is doing, but it must at least be doing better than Sit Down Shut Up, or it'd have been yanked by now.

It is, but it's still weaker than the rest of the block, and it's still pretty sure to be cancelled at the end of the season, since American Dad was renewed. Bob's Burgers at 8:30 is only doing marginally better than American Dad at 7:30, so in short, not good enough.

One notion people need to get out of their heads - American Dad is not being judged by Fox based on its performance in the 7:30 slot. It's being judged by its performance in the 9:30 slot in the fall. What Fox is trying to do is put a new show into the regular Animation Domination block to see if it can pull numbers better than what American Dad did in the regular block. So far nothing has, but they're going to keep doing that every season because you always try to improve the performance of a block rather than sit on the same lineup year after year watching it stagnate. Once a new show succeeds and outperforms American Dad's perfomance in its regular slot, American Dad is gone.

Even though I know that's most likely the case. I think its rediculous.

Guys, read it carefully... 2012-2013
That means American Dad was already renewed for 2011-2012. Why would they make Bob's Burgers if American Dad was already renewed?

Well if Bob's Burgers was a hit, they would have just burned off the 2011-2012 season of American Dad in the 7:30 slot and not made this order.

It's just Fox covering their bases. That's the tricky part about the long production time for these animated shows, they can't be cancelled on a dime like live-action ones.

The only fair comparison is how Cleveland was doing in the same timeslot at the same time last year. According to Wikipedia, Cleveland's ratings on Jan 10 2010 were 8.54 million, which I'm guessing was following football playoffs. The next few weeks it was dramatically down - Jan 31 4.53, Feb 14 4.85, and Feb 21 5.60. Now when fall 2010 came around, it was regularly seeing 6.5-7.0 again, but once again when January rolls around it's back to the high 4's - low 5's (except for Jan 9 when it was following football playoffs again, it got 7.38), but that was in the 9:30 slot so it's not exactly apples and oranges.

Now this is a very small sample size, but so far Bob's appears to be following about the same exact trend. On Jan 9 2011 it saw big ratings following football playoffs - 9.38. Then it dropped off in the following weeks - Jan 16 5.07, Jan 23 4.81, Feb 13 4.19, Feb 20 4.87. That's about the same as Cleveland at the same time period, in the same timeslot last year. So, I'm not sure how one would come to the conclusion that it had "far better ratings" at 8:30, unless you're talking about it's 2 fall seasons which isn't a fair comparison (and it wasn't even that much better in fall 2010).

But Bob's Burgers is getting higher ratings than AD...

January 16th
American Dad - 3.541
Bob's Burgers - 5.066

January 23rd
American Dad - 4.811
Bob's Burgers - 4.807

February 13th
American Dad - 3.928
Bob's Burger's - 4.185

February 20th
American Dad - 4.248
Bob's Burgers - 4.872

February 27th
American Dad (R) - 3.477
Bob's Burger's (R) - 3.833

...it's even getting better ratings than Fringe! I think it would be stupid to cancel Burgers when it's getting slightly better ratings than AD. Especially since it's just gonna get replaced by Napoleon Dynamite: The Animated Series or Allen Gregory, which are most likely gonna get worse ratings than Burgers.

I know there's only gonna be 4 slots on the Animation Domination block in September, but I think Burger's would be a good midseason replacement for the NFL.

Your forgetting that Bobs Burgers has a Simpson's lead on, lets see what happens when you put Burgers in American Dad's current slot.

Hmmm, good point. I guess it would fail, since it hasn't had enough of a chance to build up a fanbase. But, I really want this show to have a chance. The episodes that have aired so far have a lot of room for improvement, I admit. But what FOX animated show didn't? The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy and American Dad all had weak first seasons, why isn't this show allowed to find it's feet?

You also raise a good point to, but i think (i don't know about anybody else) that the crew of Bob's Burgers took the easy way out and animated the series in flash when it would look 100% better in traditional animation. I Agree it should get some time to gain its feet but that's not how FOX thinks, all they care about is ratings, because ratings= money.

I'd admit that the show's animation is a bit weak, but that's another reason they should keep it. It's cheaper than American Dad to make, but still gets similar ratings.
