American Culture: Into Thin Air?

I had to choose a book for english. I chose Into thin air by Jon Krakauer. It was a great book. I now have to choose an aspect of american culture in the book. I chose adventure. I've got some good examples and supporting quotes but need a few more. If you have something that you can compare to contemporary culture please help. Thank you. Quotes with page numbers help too.
 
i dont think its the best solution. heres what you do: you walk by her and smile. IF SHE SMILES, say "i won". then she will be like what?? then you say " the staring contest". she probably wont like you very much, but thats not because it wasn't a smooth as hell line, but because your just a huge loser/homo who has nothing better to do than ask retarded dumb@$$ questions online.
