American Animation that's popular in Japan

Nightmare Before Christmas was a bit of a flop here in America that had a big following in Japan. Ironically, the Japanese popularity caused it to be included in Kingdom Hearts, which was directly responsible for the film becoming popular enough for a flood of merchandise and rereleases over here.

Go figure.

I'm not sure something like Family Guy would do so well in Nippon. But then again, The Simpsons and South Park mught say something different.

Considering how much crap it gets in its home country...

Hey, what about foreign video games? Touhou Project fans in the west wouldn't believe what the japanese fanbase have done to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PS2 and XBOX.

Some are more popular than others, but probably due to them creating Tom & Jerry, pretty much any Hanna-Barbera cartoon from the '60s and '70s were dubbed and given their own Japanese intros and names. Scooby Doo, for instance, was 'Wimpy Krooper', the Fantastic Four was 'Space Ninja Golmes' (Gum+Holmes) with his companions Suzy, Fireboy and Gunrock, and even more obscure fair like Groovy Ghoulies, Funky Phantom, and The Impossibles got the full treatment.

Plus, Transformers, South Park, Spongebob, PPG, TMNT, Teen Titans, Teenage Robot, X-Men, and probably a few more I can't remember.

It's also kind of funny that Osamu Tezuka, who created Astro Boy and is known as the "father of anime", was HEAVILY influenced by the old Fleshier cartoons like Popeye and Betty Boop along with Disney.

From what I've read, Family Guy isn't really popular in any other country besides America.

South Park and The Simpsons are both insanely popular in England, Japan, and Australia though.

Nick Japan, which showed the Japanese dub of Avatar, got cancelled a year ago due to lack of viewers. As far as I know the dub got as far as the book 2.

There is a Japanese fandom for Avatar. Here's some Japanese fanart.

What's interesting about this fandom is that these fans have bought the English versions of DVD just so they can watch it. Japanese fansubs seem to more rare than in the west.

Looking through the current weekly ratings in Japan over at ANN the only foreign animated show I see on there is Curious George and it's usually low on the list or absent.

Alvin and The Chipmunks. The cartoons and The 21st century CGI versions. Are also popular in Japan. Sadly there seems to be a particular group of Pompous, self indulged, & overpaid film critics; in this country who are trying to exterminate them.

Maybe they have the sense to know that Homer, the lovable oaf still has more human qualities. Where as Peter is an annoying dangerous retard, who has no redeeming trace of humanity!

"seemed to manage to obtain"?

And getting a Japanese dub says nothing about how popular it is in Japan, as some of these earlier posts can attest.

I don't see how South Park is really popular in other countries. It's not something that can be broadcast on terrestrial TV without causing uproar (butchered syndicated episodes notwithstanding). You need to have cable or satellite to even now about that show.
