America is a police state

nice jump when prisons began privatizing and the "war on drugs" got into full swing. This country is rad!

This may be the case, but, shows like lock-up on MSNBC and Cops make it all worthwhile.

not to mention there would probably be a pretty significant decrease in violence with the decrease in drug trafficking and dealing

I'm 99% sure that convictions stay on your record even if the law is repealed. I'm doing some research on it but I don't have a Criminal law textbook handy at the moment

Like I said American justice system FTL

I was incarcerated for a crime I didn't commit, newspapers printed a brief article on said incarceration, I was not convicted (because there's 0 evidence when the crime wasn't commited), I still had to pay a lawyer and court costs, and nothing in the paper about the fact that the crime wasn't done.

Certainly could be true, yeah. I don't know how much we can glean from that fact though, given that some developing nations just throw whole hordes of dissidents in jail for no particular reason

Exactly what I said in less words

But the point I was trying to make is they all call themselves African Americans - except for Compton/Harlem/etc where the call themselves 'niggas'

But if you get caught multiple times with it, then yes, in a lot of places, you will serve time.

Actually, to be correct ... African Americans ... actually that's incorrect as well ...

the ones that have been in the country for a few generations or ... Americans that are black.

I would define an African American as one who is direct from Africa but has American citizenship.

I work with such a person and he's a great guy where most of the black Americans I've met are assholes

Yeah, probably wasn't germane to the thread. Just fantasizing about my escape to other countries, and was curious.

I don't think there are any innocent stoners in jail, other than in a rare few places in the deep South

There are a lot of traffickers though, which there wouldn't be if marijuana were legalized. Lots and lots of them are in jail.

You really don't understand the difference between decriminalization and legalization, do you

Decriminalization: if caught using, you pay only a small fine. No criminal record. If caught distributing, same level of jail time.

Legalization: You can buy it over-the-counter from government-run or government-licensed pharmacies, so there's no secondary market for distribution. Possible limits on the amount you can have on your person at any given time or at time of purchase

Nationwide support for weed legalization was 45% as of last October

For solely nationwide decrim, it would probably be in that 60-70 range, yeah. But only for marijuana, it drops WAAYYY down once you bring in cocaine or psychedelics
