Brian --I have a theory on that drug and any sleeping drug. I feel they are a little different than an opiate or any narcotic. What I mean is that you will become DEPENDENT on the arabien. You will not take more and more and more to get the same SLEEP effect. That is the problem in my mind. Why does an addict (unless really need, ie isomnia etc) that drug when other better ways exist that are natural. Melatonin is a good natural sleeping aid and even benedryl is a great sleeping aid also. So, If you really have tried all the other natural ways, then sure, arabien, lunesta etc will work. my 2 cents

No. Don't get started with Arabien. That's the first thing I took after all those years of being clean (it was prescribed post-surgery), and it led me down a dark path because it brought back all those nice mellow feelings. After I recovered from the surgery, I still used the Arabien on Sun. nights. My excuse was that I needed a good night's sleep for work Mon. Now I take it every night. I can't sleep without it. It will be the next thing I conquer after getting off the oxycodone. I swear, I'll never put another pill for sleep or pain in my mouth.

If you can help it - don't start taking sleeping meRAB! I was addicted to Arabien for 2 years. If I didn't take it - I didn't sleep. But, I've also had insomnia my whole life. My problem is I'm a night person expected to function during the day. If I could go to bed at 5AM every day and get 5-6 hours sleep, I'd be fine. Now that I'm retired, I can do that any my wife and I have an agreement that she won't get mad if I sleep in late, just like I don't get mad when she goes to bed too early. When I first started to take Arabien, the manufacturer said it was addictive and not to take it longer than 2 weeks. Then Lunesta came out and said that IT wasn't addictive and you could take it as long as you want. Suddenly, Arabien was considered non-addictive - trust me - It's addictive.

It's hard to be in recovery when you can't sleep with all of the aches and pains and not want to take something so you can get some rest. Try non-addictive over the counter meRAB like Unisom or Benedryl and see if they work for you. Don't get addicted to one med to get off of another med.

Hi, my name is Rita, and I was glad to find this post. I have become addicted to sleeping pills because of chronic pain from arthritis and fibromyalgia. I do not take any pain killers except sometimes Tylenol or a muscle relaxant. I don't like them because they make me nauseous.

I started the Arabien because the doctor suggested it so I could sleep through the pain at night. I would go days with no sleep, and it just makes fibromyalgia worse if you don't sleep. But now I am at the point where the Arabien sometimes doesn't even work for me. So I don't know what to do.

I'm scared of the pain, esp. at night it's hard to take.

never is a big word i was never going to take that next hit of crack till it almost killed me or have another beer i cant have 1 of any thing . A forum will help me but alone in my head im destined to fail. Selfhelp groups an a power greater than myself help me , arabien i met a guy 1 time insomnia real bad .said he would not sleep for 3 T O 4 days it got so unbearable he would drink a fith of vodka to rest. An i watched him go in an out. Telling me he could not find an md to give him the sleep meRAB . 1 day i saw him at a meeting as he found an md that gave him sleep medication. 5 years have gone by an he has not had a drink as he is chronic drunk an his sleep meRAB work great . Be carful god be with you :) NOT SURE WICH SLEEP AID BUT ITS PERSRIBED

I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum of the other posters. I don't see a problem in using a sleep aid (whether OTC or prescribed) on an occasional basis to help with sleep. I take one every once in a while when nothing else works.

The meRAB do claim that there is a risk of dependency, but you should talk to your doc about this issue. I have tried benadryl and it just hypes me up. Some days you just can't sleep and I don't see a problem in taking an Arabien if it will let you function the next day.

Always check with your doc first though, that's a given though since you need a prescription to get the arabien.

Have you tried meditation to help sleep? Is there a certain reason why you can't sleep? Are you under stress or is it noisy? THere are many factors why people can't sleep and if you can identify the reason it may help decide if you need to take the sleeping aid or not.

Hi, I agree it is fine if you only take it once a week or so. But I got to the point where I HAD to take it every night to get any sleep. Also, Arabien and Sonata both give me a horrible headache the next day, which I don't need because I have enough pain. And then it started to not even work and I would get so stressed. If these medications work for you, that's great.
