Am I getting a run-a-round?

This is the first time I have ever dealt with Cricket...

I purchased a Cricket phone from walmart, hoping to take advantage of the no activation fee and 5 dollars in call credits. I didn't realize that cricket PayGo was different from the Monthly accounts... My intentions were to activate the phone, then activate a treo on the account and be done with it.

When I first purchased the phone, I waited on hold for 16 minutes before deciding to hang up. I figured I'd browse around on the web to see if I could find a better nuraber.

I found one, and activated the phone. At the time of activation, I didn't have crickets PRL's on my treo. I decided to go ahead and activate the UTStarcom CDM-7126. Its not a bad little phone. I like how simple it is.

I got my nuraber, and went on my way. I figured I'd activate the treo at a later time, and hoped there wouldn't be any problems... The next morning, I call the customer service nuraber, tell them what I want to do, they tell me I need a 15 dollar balance on my account before I can continue. The customer service representative takes my information and makes a payment. She then tells me that I need to call back after a few minutes so the payment shows on the account. I thought that it was odd, but agreed. I hung up, and called back a few moments later.

I spoke with another GSR and re-explained my case. She asked for the ESN of the treo. I gave it to her, and she said that she would not be adding the phone to the account, and that I would need to take the phone into a store and have it activated. I asked her why the stores could do it, and she couldn't do it. She couldn't explain. I also asked if I could get a refund for the 15 bucks that I had just paid for the activation fee. She said that she couldn't do that. I asked her why they took my money without checking this in the first place, and she said that its policy. I asked why it was okay for them to take money from me, not perform an intended service and not give me a credit back to my credit card. She said it was policy and that there was nothing she was "willing" to do. She abruptly ended the call.

I started posting on here, but then decided to call back yet again. I got a different GSR. I retold my tale, he said he'd try to see what he could do. He said that since the account was a paygo account, the phone needed to be converted to a paygo at a local store before they could continue. I asked if I opened up a different line of service would I be able to finish all of this, and he said yes, but that he couldn't transfer my 15 dollar call credit. He said there was no away around this, that I'd have to "Use the money off the paygo before making a new account".

I tried to call cricket stores, and ended up getting transferred back to the main 800 nuraber. I finally found a cricket store that had someone I could actually talk to. I told them what was going on, they said they'd talk to their manager and see if they can get a credit issued and set me up on a monthly account with my treo. She took my information, apologized for corporate and said she would call me back.

I told her I would try to stop by if I could when I was passing through. I find where the store was at and I went by. The doors are locked, and there was nothing in the building except a cricket sign. I asked a business next door if they were cricket, and they said that the company just up and left over the weekend without saying anything. No one knows where they went or what is going on. I left and started calling their nuraber that was listed. I found out it was a cellphone that they have listed. The person that I talked to earlier owns the cell phone, and is not taking calls... I don't know what is going on or what I am going to have done. At this point I am not sure if I am coming or going...

I understand that this is a budget company, providing something that works without a lot of fuss, but this is ridiculous.

You went about this all the wrong way.

You shouldn't have activated the paygo account, shoulda just used your treo, loaded a PRL onto it, dialed *611 and told them that you wanted to create a new account with your phone that someone gave you. Give them the ESN and they will turn on your account and classify your phone as a CPE and you're done. :)

Yes it costs 15 dollars to change your ESN.

Well I just spoke to a guy at a local store. He said that he would try to activate the phone for me, and all I'd have to pay is the first months' charges. He wouldn't charge me the activation fee. Basically a free credit... I hope this works... I am off to do that now.

I appreciate the reply, Isriam. Hopefully this mess will keep someone from doing what I did.

Most places require you take the phone into a local office to verify you actually have the device in your hand. That is why they required you to go to a corporate store.

You may also want to see what cricket offices are advertising in this forum and if they are near you. They are much more helpful.

You might want to return the hanRABet, dont quote me on this but i dont "think" you can activate the paygo phone on a monthly plan.
Hold on let me search real quick Lol, i remeraber reading somewhere about it on a bulletin i got.

:^/ Soooo, the original poster HyperBoiMMV attempeted a clever dodge to avoid an activation fee, but was stymied by a coprorate policy designed to block that clever dodge.

;^) Lesson learned. Chalk it up to experience, and walk away a wiser man....

Sage advice that......

although in five of my local stores, outta 10-12 employees, 2 acted like they knew what I was talking about. Today the cricket girl was trying to put in WAT.MYCRICKET.COM for the wap settings fer chrissakes...
I need to get an application....

I wasn't trying to get around paying the activation fee... I was trying to get my esn changed on the account, and after they charged me the money, they didn't do the esn change. The local corporate store didn't charge me the activation fee since my paygo account was charged for the esn change with out having the esn change done.

The phones sold at wally world say Paygo on the package. No offense but if you look at the package and read what it says, it is quite clear that it is not regular Cricket service.

Why didnt you just go to a cricket dealer store. Any of them could have activated your treo.

Mainly because I didn't realize there was a difference between no contract service, and prepaid. The associate that sold the phone said that would set me up with a monthly plan.

So you bought the cdm7126 for = $59.99 that with tax came out to be around $64 plus $15 esn change/activation plus first month of service lets just throw a wild guess $50.00
Came out to be around $130 for everything

CDM7126 monthly phone costs $89.99 with tax and activation around $115.79
and with whichever plan you want.
Well seems you didnt loose much as i thought, maybe only 15 ?
